If I crack it Mark. You gotta have a go. It really is something I have always struggled with.

We've got some scrap steel at work I can use - Gusbus will be done before xmas (handed over to Chelle for curtains) I might just have a go next year and get practising in my dinner break :D

Who knows, we may both get good at it fairly soon!

Blat, blat, blat - one every 0.5 seconds or so. I wasn't even looking when I did this one. ;)

I had a natural ability in Mathematics. Football and golf. I have a natural inability for welding and public speaking. Strange but true.

Are you using Argon these days Steve?

    Argon mix like everyone uses.
Here you go, to cheer you up, this was me on the drive some years ago, learning not to try and weld upside down, on a corner, outside in the wind, in the winter!

  9. Max max on a 150 welder is around 4 to 6mm thick steel

So either the welder is carp, or you are ;)

Like @zed said, if you were closer I'd pop round and give you a welding lesson, or 6 ;)

What's the wire speed max setting on that welder? And are you still on gasless wire?

  11. Ill never get as good as a coded welder as i dont do it often enough and i often weld in less than ideal enviroments with less than ideal steel
I have got to a level though where my welding is strong enough for structual work on a vehicle

Keep the pics coming though malc as this thread has proven that the late bay its not all judgmental
And there are plenty of people available to offer advice, support and help

You payed £20 an hour for a guy to weld your westy to the standard you are doing now
Id put money that by the time you have finished that pick up you could charge £30-£40 an hour to do others welding
Ive seen the complications you have overcome in your past and the skills you have learnt to achieve that
Ive no doubt in my mind at all that you can achieve the same with welding

One thing that has not been mentioned yet is your gas flow
I was once told in an indoor enviroment the gas flow from your torch should make the flame from a lighter lean over but not blow out

That sort of goes out of the window when your welding upside down on a summers day with the sun on your face and the wind blowing across you when your joining 30 odd year old german steel to very thin modern repro panels

  12. Someone was going to say it but it wasent me or zed:lol:

  13. Welds can look a bit rough until you clean them up :)

My welding back in the day of film cameras, when I never photographed things as you had to pay for them to be developed ;) was pretty rough... but being 35 means I've been welding with a MIG for 18 years  So don't beat yourself up, you're trying to weld a particularly rusty doka... And I was going to take a hell of a lot more metal out than you have to get it back to good!! :)

Malc can take it :) And he should know I'm not being mean, just giving a firm guiding hand ;)

  15. We know paul
If im honest we all thought it was pants and thats ok
Its the way we deal with it and offer advice that matters and so far its been very supportive and good:thumbsup:

The thought that people are scared to ask a question or show pics of there work on the late bay for fear of ******* ripping really worrys me as thats not the foundations this forum was built on

Im so glad every time my worrys are proved wrong

And to ease malcs worry ill post some pics of my ***** ups on the paravan

This was me welding my sill one day

Started of ok tacking it in

Welding it in i was awfull with no real excuse apart from i was having an off day

I remember owen from ireland saying to me in the thread
Para you can weld better than that pull your sock up or somthing like that

The next day i went out didnt rush and did this

Yes not perfect visually but plenty good enough to be safe

    All on co2 hobby bottles

I often find the battle with welding is not a battle with the welder or the gas but a battle with ones own mind

Brave to put a pic like that up mate. Fair play. I have nothing to lose by putting mine up. You showing that shows humanity!

  18. So my settings advice (as I've used a fair few different MIGs) is:

    Power: 1 max
Wire speed: 1/3 of the total speed

If you've not watched this, then it's an awesome little video as the guy is very clear :)

  19. Ive no doubt about that at all

Some of the best restorers i know are stubborn feckers

  20. And to add somthing else to the mix

Ive seen work of recomended dub restorers turn out welding like yours is at this point in time malc
And charge £50 an hour plus consumables for it
Im pretty certain that steve and paul have seen the same many more times than i have

Each journey begins with the first step:)
