I personally don't know of any Wild Camping spots in the Peak District but I did do a google search: http://www.outdoorsmagic.com/forum/starting-out/wild-camping-in-the-peak-district/10521.html it does mention areas but also mentions that its not allowed! @jammy may also know of somewhere, he's down the road from us
A friend of mine often wild camps in the Goyt Valley but that's with a mountain bike and a tree slung hammock, don't think there's many places quiet enough to sneak a camper to, too many rangers around.
Sorry don't really do the peak district but if you PM me your mail address I can send you a file which you can upload to google maps that has quite a few.
Done some wild camping on top of Kinder scout in February, started snowing on my walk up Grindsbrook from Edale and didn't stop till the following day, woke up to a foot of snow over the tent, turned out really warm till I opened the tent. Fantastic experience often camp up there, its quite flat in places and lots of water and if you camp on the edges of the plateau the views can be stunning on a clear day.
We stayed in a memorial forest near chapel en lf one night some years ago. It had a car park with toilets overlooking a reservoir. It was very quiet.
If you go just past Castleton and bear right you can drive to the end of that road where it's been closed due to a landslide. There's good parking, nice views and good walking along the broken bit of road. Another place nearby (which I've only wild camped in a tent not the camper) is the tiny car park at the foot of Mam Tor. Even if you don't park overnight it's worth a trip just for the stroll along the edge from Mam Tor to Lose hill.
No to be honest I don't know anywhere, I'm sure you could find somewhere if you really wanted to but nowhere I could recommend sorry without being asked to move on or bit dodgy
It is illegal in England to wild camp but, most turn a blind eye to it if your high enough up, camp late, leave early and don't leave anything that would suggest you have been there.
Any body used this? http://www.britstops.com/britstops-map.php Sound like some cheap options...........though not quite wild camping!
Thanks for the advice going to head toward Castleton I think then at least it's not going to be rammed if I need a camp site at short notice!
Castletons always rammed, sandybays suggestion of going as far up the old mam tor road as you can is probably best.
We stopped in this site between Christmas and new year last year. It's between Hope and Castleton and about 2 mins from a very nice pub who's name escapes me. This is taken from the broken road And down at the bottom of this pic (and a bit blurry) are two parked vehicles at the lower end of the broken road, one of them is our van which is a good overnight wild camp Lovely walks in the Peak District and winter is lovely because you get the place almost to yourselves.
I knew a bloke once who was camping right on the border of North Yorkshire and the Lake District, Probably one of the most stunning areas in the UK, problem was that he was out of his comfort zone and did'nt realise where he was and what was around him, so after the weekend he decided to then drive all the way to Derbyshire, I know Derbyshire is nice and i've been loads but if where he was originally was a ten then Derbyshires about a four, It takes all sorts don't it
Peterboroughs a sh*te hole We don't live in Peterborough, we live in Hobbitshire next door, It's a bit flat but it has it's own Beauty in other ways
