I taxed her on Monday and the dvla have her classed as a private hgv. how cool is that, a VW hgv camper.

Today I took some pictures of how you fill in an old analogue tachograph - just for your perusal.

This is the tacho head looking from the front.

You need a wax tacho disc - I happen to have a couple of old ones hanging around.

Fill in the centre field without going over the designated spaces. It is up to £1000 fine if you do for each time you do.

Top lines for name, side left top two lines, start and finish date. left bottom lines- registration number. Bottom three lines, start mileage, finish mileage, and total.

Open tacho head with permanent key at top and insert disc rear facing to stylus

Close tacho head and do journey. You have 15 hours max working time and 10 hours max accumulated driving. So in essence you can do a total working day of 15 hours, but only 10 hours driving. the other 5 hours must be made up of breaks or other duties. loading etc. 10 hours at 56 mph 560 miles. That is more than it is from London to Aberdeen. You can do 10 hours twice in one working week the rest have to be 9 or less. you can only do 90 hours accumulated driving in a fortnight. if you do 47 hours driving one week you can only do 43 the next week. Big fines await anyone breaking the rules.

I am probably restricted to 60 on motorways and all other route restrictions may apply. I will have to look into it. I am a bit concerned about the mot too now, although I am sure the class of hgv it is will be within a local large garage facilities. I am also certain it is drivable on a car licence because of the camper conversion. The previous three owners have all been non hgv licence owners.

I see you have filled your name in as Malcom C***.
Shall we play guess the surname?

  6. I assumed its classed as a private HGV because it is over 3.5ton?
It that class 4 for MOT purposes then?

  7. My old mot man had a big camper he had to take it somewhere other than his place to get it tested ,but he used to say it was no big deal ,class 3 or 4 testing place...[I think]

Sooo I never got the disc thing [tacho] what do they do?

All commercial vehicles over 3.5 ton have to have a journey recording device. Tachograph. These days we have a digital card reader. and a debit card type license that we insert at the beginning of our shift. Back in the day we used the analog tacho above. They came into force the year before my LT was made, so that is a nice retro Kienzle tachometer.

  14. I am just confused how it works ,does it spin? is the clock thing filled with ink?

Yes it turns continually like a clock. The stylus at the back moves up and down as you increase and decrease your speed. It traces your journey on to the wax front of the disc. That is why you are fined for writing outside of the fields, it can infringe on the recorded trace. So they say?

I think it would lead to multiple injuries atm, went around it last night and there were 20 workmen and a zillion traffic cones around it.

On Saturday Will and I made our way to the new Bingley hall Stafford in our yet to be seen by other members VW LT50 Woodlander for our first TLB meet of the season, Dubfreeze. We were joined by the effervescent VWolive and half a dozen other tlbers, so we were in pleasant company and braved the cold 'as a man'. Actually, we were slightly warmer because at a push we could retreat to the warmth of the Woodlander and its comfort if need be, but the great company held us firmly to the outside chairs around the forepit.

On Sunday after being joined by Flakey and a few others we did the inside show ( which was pretty good btw) Will enjoyed meeting Fuzz Townshend at the Carol Nash stand and winning a sweatshirt. afterwards we retreated to the warmth of the woodlander and were soon joined by Rick, Mrs Rick , daisy Moons Johnno, Bern and Flakey. we were not uncomfortable or packed in, and the van took on a warm tlb glow. As we sat and stood chatting , a knock came on the door. Rick answered and a chap stepped in saying " I built this van" Rick showed him, his son and his two grandchildren in and soon he was seated with Bern and myself and relating the tale of his business venture, He explained that he wanted a big motorhome and had been to autotrail to view them and upon seeing how they were made on the factory tour had decided to make his own in his barn, he was a joiner so naturally had the required skills. he told me the chassis was £10,000 alone when he purchased it from beeches of Stoke. he then told me He sold them for £30,000 when finished and promised to send me further details. He went on to say the first van he made was a LT35 that was burned down while on a stand in the Bingley hall fire of 1984. He made mine second and kept the 3rd one for himself which he still owns. We all listened intently as this chap spoke and the marvelous coincidence unfolded. To cap it all, he wasn't even there for the dub show, he was simply helping out with a garden railway exhibition and had wandered over with his son to take a look at the dubs for sale. We spent 30 or 40 minutes chatting, swapped telephone numbers and he invited me to his home in Cheadle where the van was made, it's called Woodlands.

When home from a great weekend, I was settling in for a quiet night when the phone rang. It was Chris the maker of my motorhome, we chatted and he spoke in more detail of his enterprise, he again invited me and Lou to his home and workshop to visit his wife ( who also worked on my van and would dearly like to see it )which we have readily agreed to do when the weather warms up. he asked for my address and today in the post I received these...

I am chuffed, what great bloke.

A cracking weekend. I was even joined in the Woodlander afterwards by @Dicky Who I think wished I would take a breath when relating the tale.

I enjoyed meeting friends old and new. Tlb'ers are a great bunch, but Mr Stephens the builder just capped a great weekend in the cold of Staffordshire.
