West Coast Trip

Discussion in 'Scotland' started by alanchester, Oct 6, 2014.

  1. Heading off tomorrow on another west coast sortie with overnight stops at "By the Way, Tyndrum" and "The Oban Caravan & Camping" sites before catching the ferry to the Isle of Mull for The Mull Rally. Will be staying at The Tobermory Campsite for 4 nights during the rally.

Since our van is undergoing major surgery we have hired 'Brucie' a 73' Devon from Neil at Cartys Campers.

  4. You really should, the scenery is absolutely stunning a Colin Prior picture around every corner.
Only caveat is the weather, if you get it dry, result. If you get it sunny it's like winning the lottery obviously without the cash.

  6. Lying in the van right now in By The Way, Tyndrum using their excellent WiFi, must be very posh as its quicker than than the WiFi in our house!
Been a great day with sunny weather.
Had a nice bar meal at The Tyndrum Inn and a few ales. Mrs C taking bets for how many times I'll need to get up for the loo during the night. Lol

  7. Oban
We chose to stay at the Oban Caravan & Camping site which is located about 3 miles outside of town. The site is very picturesque being located a stones through from the water in the rising hillside. Hard standing tiered pitches with electric hook ups. Good toilet and shower blocks. We didn't check in until late spending our day in Oban and eating an early tea at the Waterfront Fish Restaurant which was lovely.

The next day we were off to the Isle of Mull, my first time loading a camper onto a ferry, no issues I'm glad to say.

    Mull
Our reason for going to Mull was for the 45th Tour of Mull Rally and because of this we saw very little of the island other than the very scenic drive from the ferry terminal at Craignure to Tobermory and the area around Tobermory itself. We will definitely be going back for more, it's so beautiful.

The only campsite close to Tobermory is the Tobermory Campsite funnily enough. It's a lovely wee campsite but quite basic with only a couple of toilets and showers that could do with a bit of a revamp and struggle to cope during busy times, the campsite was full due to the rally but we managed with crucial timing Hard standings with electric hook up. The site is located 1 1/2 mile outside of Tobermory it is quite a challenging walk if your not a walker but we were fine with it.

There is a couple of nice pubs, Mishnish was our favourite with good selection of beers and food.

The best restaurant by far was Cafe Fish. The food was to die for albeit a bit expensive but the best seafood I have ever tasted and spectacular views over the bay Witherspoon's sun going down was a winner with the Mrs C.

All in all great trip with great weather, fantastic scenery and super company. Need to get our own van moving so we can plan our next trip.

  13. Very jealous. I'm a big fan of the west coast of Scotland. Trying to get the other half to do a similar trip next year but I need her to take only 1 third of the amount of stuff she normally does.
