Carl's How To: Door Cards

Discussion in 'How To' started by carlperkins001, Jul 5, 2014.

  1. Right o'
had a few people ask me for help on door cards etc, and some asking for how to's on door cards and seat covers etc etc.
so here goes part 1. Door Cards.

    You will need:
    About 5m of cream vinyl,
    4m of white vinyl,
    3 cans of spray glue
    35m of 6mm piping cord
A piping foot for sewing machine
    5m of 3mm scrim foam
    3m of 6mm scrim foam

start with your roll of vinyl, lay face down on the floor, and use something square to get a nice square starting point. then trim off the crooked end.

now you've a nice square edge to start from..
    mark a chunk at 40cm,
    [IMG]

youll need about 8x40cm sections if your doing a whole set of door cards..

once you have your sections of vinyl.. lay them face up on a table and using a bit of wood, mark out your pleats. I use a old bit of bed frame which is 6.5cm thick.
    ta-da..

now.. lay your foam 'scrim' down on the floor, and use some adhesive to glue the vinyl to the foam.
once glued, cut round the edge. repeat this for all 8 bits.

  2. now you've got that done..
    its time to sew.
notice ive got green thread, dont matter what colour you use to do this bit, it wont be seen in the end. im using green because i only had 1 roll of white thread.
with your normal sewing foot, sew along the lines..

it doesn't matter if you go off line slightly, so don't worry if its not perfectly straight..
once you've done all lines.. the back should look like this..

now i have to change my thread over to white. as this part will be seen.
at each sew'd line, turn the vinyl back onto itself.

then run this through the sewing machine, sewing about 0.5mm away from the green sew'd line..

  3. then it will look like this..

    from the front:
notice how you cant see the stitching on the finished pleat..
    after you've done them all..

notice how I've left the green stitch at the end.. you'll see why later..

I've laid the fluting on top of the panel.. AND!! ... its too short. (i knew it would happen ;))
so.. you need to extend the fluting. take one of the other fluting panels youve made, and cut a few flutes off the end..

lay the fluting face to face.. and line up the green stitching lines..

then sew 0.5mm away from the green line.

  4. and from the front it will look like this..
    next up..
where you've sewn all the pleats, you will have excess at the back, lop this off with some sharp scissors..

so like this.. left to right.. trimmed pleat, not trim pleat, join between fluted panels..

trim all the pleat backs and your done.. now you have a long enough panel..

    now to add piping..
you'll need 2 strips of 1.5" vinyl. 12 will do a whole panel set, so i did them all together..
and youll need a piping foot for this..

cut two lengths of 6mm piping cord, long enough for the width of the panel.
    then make some piping..

  5. Very good how to, but I'm not good with a sewing machine, how much would you charge to do my door cards please?

  6. you will now have two long strips of piping..
sew these onto each side of the fluted panel like this..
    both done..

now.. lay your panel on the floor and mark a line 6" from the top of the panel.. can be seen in the pic up there ^^
from this you can work out how much vinyl you will need to go on the top and bottom of your panel. I need 6" on top and 10" on bottom, so will cut the bits with 2" extra to allow to wrap around the back for stapling.
so cut to strips of vinyl 8" & 12"..
then sew these strips to each side of the fluted section.. face down obviously..
then trim the excess material from the back.
    repeat for both bits..

  7. Great information, thanks for sharing.

  8. as you can see in the pic above.. I've marked where the piping will go, and I've notched the panel to allow it to sit flush on each side.
now.. where the lines are you can see.. youll need to glue some 6mm scrim foam upto the lines on each side..

now lay your fluted panel face down on the floor, and put your board ontop. now you can start to go round the edge stapling. start on the fluted bits, then carry on with the straight edges..

then you get to the corners..

pull it nice and tight, but not so hard you rip it, then staple and cut off the excess..

  9. I forgot to get pics whilst I was doing the piping bit.. but basically use a sharp knife to slice the vinyl piping cord bit, then snip the excess.
after that.. staple to vinyl bit up and then trim off the excess..

    and finished..

  14. that is absolutely brilliant.:thumbsup::thumbsup:
    can i ask 2 questions
1, do you use standard type and thickness thread.
2, when you fold over the pleat do you meen 0.5mm from fold or actually 5mm before trimming it off at the back.
great work.........other half has no excuses now.

  16. Yeah just standard guterman polyester thread, the extra thick strong stuff gets jammed in the machine, and its a bit overkill anyway.
Ah good spot! Yeah 0.5 cm that should be! Will edit later ;) it doesnt have to be exactly 5mm, you just need to sew in far enough so that you can cut off the excess. Hope that helps.

  17. i bought 6m of cream vinyl in the range yesterday for £32. its relatively thick and imo will be fine for door cards etc they do black and brown and on the website say the cream is by mail order only but i managed to get some in the store. worth a look and in view of cost is worth me having a go soon thanks to the above post. :)

  19. @Baydreamer do you have a pic if the vinyl mate, I'm going for cream too

  20. The vinyl in the pics^^ is from dunelm mill. Its about £7 a meter and very good quality.
Also, their glue is great! Ive tried a few different glues and some don't stick properly and cause the vinyl to swell a little and go soggy lol. And thats like £6 a can. Dont use hobby craft glue... Its Marmite
