  1. Due to my 1975 twin slider kombi being almost finished after a 3years no holes bared full nut and bolt resto im selling my split to make some room on the drive, so here we go with the description.

With much regret I’ve decided to sell my 1964 13 window deluxe camper it will be sorely missed as it has taken me and the family to loads of shows and on a fair few summer holidays over the years it was even my wedding car! Since the van has been in the uk it has always been garaged and has only ever been used in the summer months, it’s been maintained to the highest standard and whatever it’s needed it’s had at any cost! It has passed ever mot with no advisories as its like new underneath and there’s no black under seal to hide any naughty’s.

I’ve owned the van since 2006 im the only UK keeper and the logbook shows its a 1900cc diesel, the van is tax exempt and MOT’d till April 2014
The van has been restored underneath with new panels as required (see below) and looks like new, Above ground sympathetic repairs have been done to keep it looking un-restored. The upper body rust is surface only and has not deteriorated since ive owned it in the past 6years.
The camper is built from a 64 us spec deluxe microbus the highest spec van at the time., A factory special order van with option code M130 to “delete sunroof and panoramic windows” the big tailgate split vans were only built 64-67 which makes the 13 window deluxe a rare old bus!

    o/s complete wheel arch/cabstep

    Various small localised repairs

All repairs have been done with the van rolled over on a car tilter and have been welded with a proper mig (not a 100amp hobby welder)
The chassis and all repairs have been por15'd, floor panels and under arches have been gravitexed then the underside and engine bay has been repainted in 2k solid turkis green OG colour
I’ve owned aircooled vw vans since the 1990’s so I wanted a van that looked old with modern car mechanicals (doesn’t everyone!) it had to be able to drive 1000’s of miles a year without having to mess about tuning engines and adjusting brakes etc so all mechanicals had to be modernised. all mechanical parts have been replaced or upgraded a full proper nut and bolt restoration
The van has been featured in both the split screen van club magazine and camper and bus magazine and won best custom split at camper jam 2009

The camper has been professionally converted to run a VW 1.9 TDI engine with cruise control which take the stress out of long motorway journeys, the engine has been mildly modified with a de-cat’d, EGR delete and a free flow filter and stainless steel silencer, The van is very nippy and pulls strong due to max torque being at only 1900rpm combine this with the up-rated and rebuilt freeway flyer 091 2litre bay gearbox it will easily keep up with modern traffic but is smoother to drive in traffic than a modified aircooled engine! The van cruises at 65-70mph without even trying and it returns 40mpg on a run probably double what a 100bhp aircooled van will do? and if pushed will go back round to needle stop on speedo if your really in a rush (on private roads obviously ;-)

With all the extra power the brakes have been upgraded to 280mm drilled vented disks up front and 280mm drilled rears with a dual circuit master cylinder and a direct acting servo to make the brake pedal nice and light to push.
The suspension has been upgraded to a cb performance 2” narrowed beam up front with KYB gr2 gas shocks at the rear the reduction boxes have been junked in favour of a Volksheaven type2 IRS kit again complemented with KYB gr2 up-rated gas shocks and then the whole van has been lowered around 6”/150mm from standard
To help keep to van running true at the new higher speeds the steering has been upgraded to a power assisted direct acting rack and pinion steering setup this makes the van much more responsive to drive and takes out the usual steering box and centre pin free play, The steering Is now light enough to park with 1 hand just like a modern car even with the smaller 1960’s nardi wooden steering wheel.

So here is a brief rundown on the main juicy bits:

1964 13 window deluxe microbus complete with all deluxe trim parts still fitted, fully restored underbody and engine bay both have been 2k painted in original factory colour turkis grun with photos for buyer. I can fully assure you the are no scary repairs covered in bondo and shiny paint done by chuck and hank to rot back through by next spring!!!!!

Full width roll and roll bed 6’3” long with 5” thick foam(better than at home)

(could go back to aircooled in a weekend as there are no cuts in engine bay)

    Cruise control

Freeway flyer 091 6 rib 2.0 litre bay gearbox fully reconditioned,

Front and rear interior heaters running from engine coolant (mega warm not like aircooled!)

Amplifed JBL 10” speakers for iphone, Ipod tablet connectivity (3.5mm jack input)

So there you have it! the vans honest and it is exactly as ive described it. No nastys hiding below the surface to bite you on the bum next a year. A good friend once said to me “better honest rust than dishonest paint” bear this in mind with shiney vans! every scratch and mark tells a story about its life. The vans been a hoot to own and drive attracts so much attention whether driving around town show boating or at vw shows/festivals up and down the country. Im only selling as I have another long term project is nearing completion plus 4 other cars and this one does the least mileage every year.

Any questions about the camper from genuine buyers please send me a pm (please no tyre kickers or people wanting advice on how to convert there own van as I do have a busy life! ) the van will be at vanfest all weekend if anyone wants a a look round it?

Im looking for £22k ovno reflecting on the cost of a deluxe microbus, the resto work and the large spec sheet it‘s a genuine bargain! A similar spec van would cost in the region of £40k-£50k to have built
