I know it's been covered, but I'm very keen on doing a Scooby conversion. Is that better?

  1. No, I'm just wanting to start getting it set up so I can see what goes where.
I'll sort some photo's out but there's not a lot to see at the moment. (If anyone else is doing this conversion,I'd like some pic's) :)

The molded metal bracket that holds the alternater for instance has the extra bits that the power steering pump and the air con pump fix to..
If I'm not needing these to pumps I might cut / grind down theses mountings to make them look better.

  2. Hi John OK, I am at a similar position, I have just bought a 091 to match to EJ22. I was considering making something to run it on to test it all out, especially the loom. I have two camper a late 73 and an early 73 cross-over. I was considering this route also to minimise down time and to keep one on the road. I have taken the air-cooled engine out so I can scope out the fit. Ideally I want to go for something that does not cut the vehicle about too much and uses original fixings, I like the RJES Bellhousing and the 'Small Car' Engine Bar Mount.,

Good to pool info as not too many DIY conversions out there (except Kevin) I am trying to the best job as cheaply as possible because I haven't got 6K to throw at it.

    Still looking for :

Best proven DIY radiator, cooling set up.
Best exhaust system or simplest to adapt from.
Fuel set up with a swirl pot or similar.

BTW I just took the steering pump off and intend to fit a disc there as fellows speed shop do.

    Good luck

mine just hangs from the rails with two fans on top and a box that hands below that scooping up the air

my exghaust was 650 from rjes with the lamdo sersor fitting not cheap but sound wicked

i havnt got a swirl pot and havent noticed any problem at all

  4. Thanks again Kevin. £650 is expensive but might just take the hit if I can't find an alternative. What was the radiator was from? Good news re swirl pot thanks.

Yours is a cross-over? and you didn't mod the gearbox (091?) hanger from memory? Did you use the RJES mount bar?

No mod on gearbox i havnt got a hanger rich at rhes said it wasnt needed
Had to cut a small bit on chassis for startermotor to fit
Subaru rad but any you can find that fits the space between rails will do

Vwkd is a very good site i got most of my info from there

  6. Gazza, I'm not sure where you're from but if your local to me you're welcome to pop round and swap notes :)...

As for £6k.. Forget it.. I'm buying a bit..Selling a bit.. Buying a bit etc..
I sold the original engine and carbs for £706.. Another few bits from the engine for another £50 and then bought a complete Subaru for £500..
I'm slowly selling off unwanted bits and pieces from the Subaru to fund the new RJES clutch and bell housing.. Then I'll look at the engine mount etc.

As for the loom, I hate electrics and the harness of my donor Subaru is huge.. I removed it in one piece, I'll might ask Richard (RJES) to sort it for me?

The radiator? I thought the original might do? I was going to cut and bend a scoop in the original VW belly pan.. I suppose a bit like ram air on a motor bike?

I'm uploading a few pic's onto photobucket (nothing very exciting).. I'll post them soon..

  7. I'll just keep spying on this thread :)

Ive got the scooby but no time to strip it and fit yet, so i really am leaning alot from here, VWKD and the Rjes site.

Re the exhaust - is there anyway an originla type4 silencer could be used with modded manifolds? so basically use the rjes pipe to ports bit onto some pipes that end in a flange to match the og box?

  9. I'm in Essex so probably a bit far. It's a very gradual process but I am determined to get there eventually. My engine came with the car and is a bit of an unknown hence trying to get it running to test before transferring. Loom is a nightmare trust me go to Richard is my advice, however if you do try it I have some wiring diagrams and happy to share.

Kev has used the original radiator, and to be honest it never occurred to me that it might fit. There are various example of scoop on this thread.
I was expecting to angle down slightly and scoop in incoming air, venting hot air to the rear but this would suggest quite an open box and most appear to be closed taking air in at bottom and pushing it up into the chassis space between the rails? need to get to the bottom of that one...

look forward to seeing the photo's

  10. Your right, "Essex is a bit far" :(.. "Gradual/determined/eventually".. I'm with you :).. Not in a rush , just want it right..
" Your car is a bit of unknown? ".. Have you not driven it? I bought mine complete and drove it.. It was sweet/smooth/full service history.
"Kev's original radiator"?.. I thought it worked originally so why not.. Just need to weld four supporting brackets onto the chassis rails and add the customised scoop and pipe work?

    Sounds so simple :eek::eek::eek:

Im going to look at my.cooling this year, even thou ive never had a heating problem.
if i floor it on the motor way my Temp does rise a bit but its not caused a problem
Even in spain on red hot days on motorways i didnt have a ussue just thr trmp gauge rising a little

  16. This is probably a silly question.. Can't you buy / make those C shaped double washer thingys with the locking tabs? (Hard to describe what I mean)For six bolts you would need 3 of them. ( Not sure what application they were used for but I have seen them)

You Can buy the original Spreader bars plus the correct washes which i have now fitted.
All drive shafts should have these fitted whatever engine you have installed
