I have just had a Subaru put in mine after a 1600 that never let me down but, like Baysearcher says, I was always conscious that it could at any time. Also my kids are going to use/abuse it. Bought the Fellowspeed conversion kit which is pricy but superb quality. It will also be at techenders if you want to do some doughnuts in Eddy's field.
I would do it if my engine goes bang, if you look at some of the prices people pay for a custom air cooled engine, there's not much in it........ Apart from a modern, awesome reliable engine
I've said it before, and I'll say it again.... Modern does not equal reliable... Subaru engines have their flaws too!! Only takes a little bit of googling to see that!! Also bigger aircooled engines does not equate to more servicing, and more problems.... I did 15k of hard driving on my 2270 type 4, and I pulled it down to see what wear and tear had occurred to the bearings, and they looked brand new!! I also only broke down once in that time, and that was due to a rubbish facet fuel pump!!
I'd still do a scooby conversion if someone asked me to!! My point was to go into it open eyed, as both routes have their pros and cons
I know; the majority aren't built properly though! I'm not anti air-cooled by any means, I had mine for 8 years or so. I just love my new one more!
Have we had a pole before ( i dont know how to do one) Subarue /standard 1600/2000 / souped up etc etc
I had a good chat with the guys at fellows speed shop at the weekend . still not for me .but I can see why people do it ,late bay 2 kids and nagging wife
I'm thinking of going the other way tbh.... my WRX Impreza's a bit cramped, and I'd like to fit a cooker and bed in there for week ends away...any suggestions?
Not sure.if the gearbox will fit thou is the engine the wrong way round plus cooling could be a problem
