Subaru conversion

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Peakynut, Feb 19, 2014.

  1. I have just had a Subaru put in mine after a 1600 that never let me down but, like Baysearcher says, I was always conscious that it could at any time. Also my kids are going to use/abuse it. Bought the Fellowspeed conversion kit which is pricy but superb quality. It will also be at techenders if you want to do some doughnuts in Eddy's field.

  2. I would do it if my engine goes bang, if you look at some of the prices people pay for a custom air cooled engine, there's not much in it........ Apart from a modern, awesome reliable engine :)

  3. I've said it before, and I'll say it again.... Modern does not equal reliable... Subaru engines have their flaws too!! Only takes a little bit of googling to see that!! :)

Also bigger aircooled engines does not equate to more servicing, and more problems.... I did 15k of hard driving on my 2270 type 4, and I pulled it down to see what wear and tear had occurred to the bearings, and they looked brand new!! :)

I also only broke down once in that time, and that was due to a rubbish facet fuel pump!! o_O

  5.

I'd still do a scooby conversion if someone asked me to!! :)

My point was to go into it open eyed, as both routes have their pros and cons

Funny you should say that because I haven't had to re-fill mine with oil recently!

    Or fuel every ten miles

  11. If you offered to fit me a scoobie mate I wouldnt argue! Still love me type 4 lump though!

  12. I've never had to do that :p

If it's built properly it won't be dumping it's oil everywhere either ;)

I know; the majority aren't built properly though!

I'm not anti air-cooled by any means, I had mine for 8 years or so. I just love my new one more!

Not sure.if the gearbox will fit thou is the engine the wrong way round plus cooling could be a problem
