It started with many a conversation that went something like:

    'Can I have a pickup?'
    'You don't need a pickup'
    'Can I have a pickup?'
'What are you going to do with a pickup?'
'Carry logs. Can I have one?'
    'You don't need a pickup'

    Some months later......

    'Can I have a pickup?'
'If you really want one, but don't expect me to take any interest in it.'

    Result!!!!!!!

A short time later saw me taking a trip down to Chelmsford to look at one that I had been watching on eBay, as it reduced in price over time. Spoke to the guy selling it on a couple of occasions and realised that he had bought it on a whim, paid over the odds, and had no practical use for it.

5 hours later I saw this in the flesh:

I now get the "We can't afford it until you get a job again". My counter argument about Ms.T being a Doctor & therefore earning lots of money falls on deaf ears. The earning lots of money is not actually factual as she works in the public health system because private hospitals don't have emergency departments. :( She chose the wrong speciality to become rich. I'm not even allowed to go & look at a Beetle which is for sale locally

I've started this thread because it's almost time for the van to go and get some of the work done and I thought that it might make interesting viewing. It was always intended to be a project for me. Some stuff I will do myself, other things will be doen by people who know what they are doing :(

The trip to pick it up was a bit of an adventure in itself due to storms and cancelled trains and the roof blowing off the hotel we were supposed to be staying in the night before we drove back.

On the 7 hour drive back we stopped off at @zed 's to say hello. He didn't tut once and seemed to think I'd not done too badly.

Although we both thought that the exhaust might be the first thing to go

  14. looks tidy. They look like the lucas spot lights on the jokers bus. How have they managed to get the indicator lenses to blend with the paint work? Dont like the white centre caps though. Exhaust looks good, whats wrong with you

We had a hot start issue after we stopped for petrol, bounced the belly pan off the road in the fens, but generally had a reasonable trip home, after which Jenny announced :
'I actually quite like it" Result

I didn't get a lot of paperwork with it, but did get a pile of old MOTs - looking through those it seems that the 55,000 miles on it is probably genuine. It had a gap of about 8 years when it seems to have been laid up.

The tilt cover has shrunk over time, having been left rolled up by the previous guy and won't buckle down fully so I bought a selection of bungees and strapped it down with them as a temporary measure. I set about trying to find someone who could make me a new tilt cover, and hopefully a tonneau as well. Spoke to a lot of people before I got the details of Stuart a thttp://www.vwcanvas.co.uk/. Ordered one of each some time before Christmas.

Whatever @Joker might think I didn't like the Phat Boy exhaust so got hold of a Vintage Speed one. I wasn't happy with the lumpy running that we had on the way home and wanted to get it checked over, having no real service history. Wombat was at 81a in Southport having some work done, so John let me swap vans when we went to pick Wombat up.

We went to have a chat about what needed doing about a week later - I had it in mind that we might do a bit at a time, which we could, but practically it made more sense to do the majority of the body work in one hit. So I left there with a nice shiny, slightly less 'in-your-face' exhaust system, a slightly less lumpy 1600 single carb set-up, and a rather long shopping list.

Taken this off FB and I can't make it only show once :(

  19. This is exactly what I want for no practical reason other than I want one! I think that I need to finish my Viking first really. If I got one I would have to take the strategic approach of NOT mentioning it to the Mrs and sneaking it into the garage until she notices it one day :)

  20. vintage speed is the future. I like these tuckaways, might chose that for next time
