Cheers....., I have that issue, but unfortunately its dealing with an earlier bus, so the column and how you get to the switch is different.
Have you undone the small little screw on the ignition barrel casing it may have been covered by a blob of paint
Soft faced hammer and tap the steering shaft down, itwill all come apart and be obvious , the spacer will come off as you tap
Was the dog black before you got the Satin Black out? Did you get that sticker new, where did you get it from?
I think your correct The link i put upthere was for a 78 bus and it has colour photos so should help Ive yet to do this job myself yet but do need to do it on the paravan when it comes back from paul
You're not wrong. I tried to replace the thermostat on my type 4 engine today, and I've cross-threaded the new bellows and ruined the internal thread on the brass collar
Nope mines a 78 and it hasent had the shear bolt drilled out yet When my ignition switch went us i was using the bus for the summer so i pulled the nylon plug from the switch and fitted a new switch to the plug and used a flat bladed screwdriver to start the bus till it came off the road
That's what I was going to question. To tap the whole shaft down, surely I will need to unbolt the whole thing underneath where it bolts on to the square rubber connector thingy (technical term). Can the black plastic sleeve not just be levered off?
You will - the coupler supports the inner column. Really...just go for for it and take the whole lot off. It's quicker, and you'll discover how you should have done it in the first place
I've got to go in to work today, so I shall try to give it a go later this afternoon........if it ever stops raining again. I did look at this yesterday and wonder if to unbolt it. The bolts look pretty manky to undo, so I may Plusgas them before I go to work.
Excellent! I'd worry that I'd forget to turn the key to disengage the steering lock, fire the van up and drive off, only to find I couldn't steer I didn't have one of those fancy drills for removing my shear bolt, but luckily they aren't done up very tight so you can quite easily undo them with a hammer and chiesel.
Right......That's all apart - with the help of a large rubber faced mallet. I replaced the rubber steering coupling at the same time as the old one was looking slightly ropey and frayed However, the new ignition switch is pants. It won't return to the run position after turning it to start. The spring just doesn't work. Tried it fitted in and out of the housing to check it wasn't fouling on anything. The old one springs back OK - just seems to have a dodgy connection inside somewhere. Suppose that's what you get with cheap pattern electrical parts. Got another one on its way to me, hope that one works better. At least everything is now just lined up to reasemble once I get a working switch.
