i wondered if anyone on tlb has power steering, and there thoughts on it , ( from what ive read it seems mixed , but like owning an old vw camper , you dont know what its like until youve taken the plunge , or at least dipped your toe in so to speak )
Just watched your vid on bookface. and see you have done one at least already. Strange that I was discussing you with a mate from Bolton a couple of days ago. Im pretty sold on the idea but would love to see one in the flesh before attacking mine!
The best steering cars I've owned have had no power steering. They are also the ones you have to drive correctly, as taught in the old days - always steer when moving slowly, never when stationary.
My view is - The Mrs would like it, the cost when I enquired was stupid money, The motors are easily available and they can do it in a day, I am not going to mention the company but the profit margin was about 85% £1200, nah - do it myself for about £120 and two days faffing.
anything you do to a bay ( steering wise ) can be changed back to stock in 2 hours, without leaving any clues behind, so its not the end if you dont gel with it ( never happened ),, best thing is to have a go in something with it on , it will give you a good idea,
Do you know what - I truly wanted to take it up and get it done by them when they were telling me about it, then they told me the price, I just said " mate you're having a larf and put the phone down" I had been pricing up bits and working out how to do it myself and was prepared for maybe £450 650 maybe plus vat but when he said they sometimes used s/h motors too I just took a walk, ok new motors are very dear and there is a fair bit of fabrication so I suppose the £1200 price was reasonable. but motors always LOOK new? The last motor I enquired about ( corsa from a local scrap yard with swap back option ) £45!

My other thoughts are about the wear on tyres etc, the parking thing is what my Mrs wants it for and the extra strain on tyre walls will be a lot because she like most will just yank it into tight spots? Steering coupling - I have always thought this the weak link when in a tight spot and seeing how many cappy ones are splitting I have begun to think the ps would soon find fault in them.

Just a thought!
correct , the weak link in the chain is the rubber joint , but if yours is in good order it will be fine ( always make sure you fabricated joints are stronger than the weakest one on the vehicle and your sweet ) as for when the other 1/2 drives it,, dont worry its all upto the job ( thats providing its all in reasonable order ) your only putting the same stain / force on the steerring set up as you normally would,,, its just the input force you need to apply has been reduced ( with most "eps"systems turned up full it can reduce the input needed by upto 80% )
yes but people tend to steer without moving the vehicle when they have power steering - you should have seen the mess of my inner tyre walls on my 3 year old Xtype when I first mot'ed it, I had taken it for a blast out as it was diesel before taking it in to clear the exhaust etc - well fast for quite few miles, when it was on the ramp the mot man called me over and said I should take a look - they were reasonably new tyres and close to the wheel rim massive cracks which you couldn't see from the ground if you looked, they were well dangerous and it caused by the ps. jag sort of admitted this later - they said heavy motor tight, spots etc,
I would be happy to let someone fit a eps unit for me - a secondhand one - for about £450 maybe and I mean maybe 500 at a push but other than that I am happy to do my own, I think a price like that would get lots of bay owners thinking of it too! Just my opinion!
