  1. Last year the van broke down first time ever(duff points as it turned out) my insurance policy includes free breakdown cover also, fine but when I called them from the hard shoulder I go the impression it was 1 bloke on call phoning from his bedroom then calling someone to pick the van up? I waited an hour and someone turned up. At the time I thought it was the fuel pump so I asked for a lowloader. The guy was only told to tow me off the motorway and to the nearest services carpark! What use is that?
As luck would have it my work was only another mile away so he agreed to tow me there instead. Anyway these policies included with free breakdown are bascially rubbish. You are only allowed to breakdown 4 times a year and well I thought the service was rubbish.
I have used Autoaid for years and in the end called them out. They were quick proffessional and the guy sussed it was the points very quickly. In the past I had them tow my car to where I wanted not some backwater that suits them.

They are the sort that of breakdown cover where you pay first and claim back but I got my money back after a week (pay the breakdown guy via credit card) only costs me £38, full cover the AA or RAC do, and its me that is covered not the car.
Camper vans are included in the cover many wont touch them.

  2. My insurance is due very soon, currently using Cherished. At least i can now make an informed decision so thanks to Baysearcher for bringing this matter to our attention.

cherished use AA for breakdown and from experience can't fault them. On another occassion i broke down on motorway in a car and i was just towed off for safety and that was another company.

3 months after telling me they would be doing it, I received the letter from Cherished this week clarifying the re-patriation situation.
It pretty much says we may, we may not repatriate.
I for one will be shopping around come renewal time.

  5. tbh i didn't even think about this when i took my insurance out with Peter james but will be asking them when it comes to renewal.

as a back-up plan how about we look at the cost of flying zed out with a spare engine? he'll have to find his passport first but may be cheaper than repatriation charges :p

  6. We had the letter yesterday ,its all worded so as to confuse , as Baysearcher says we will be shopping around come renewal time as we already have the ferry booked

Trust an insurance company, especially when broken down in the middle of Europe - no way. Let's hope they respond positively and confirm in writing before you set off.
