We kept a 177 air rifle in our attic bedroom for shooting anything in sight, one day the street bully ( a weirdo who was in his late teens ) chased us up the street, we ran into our house and locked the door but he hung around waiting in our garden for us to come out. He truly did used to beat the crud out of us when he was mad and he was on the warpath so we shot him up with air rifle from the attic window. His mum brought the police round later and they made us apologise for all the bruises we’d inflicted on him, but he got a worse telling off after we told them how much he beat us up, we were only 11!

We had an Ack Ack gun on our roof to repel any bullies who might think about raiding us via hot air balloon. That and the anti personnel mines we had hidden in the front lawn. You try telling that to kids today though! That’s if you can get them to look up for a second from their Commodore C64 computers and MySpace pages!

From 7 to 10 maybe we lived on the one road completed on a big housing development - that was previously a large plant nursery site.

My old man used to go regularly and pick a barrow of bricks up from the knocked down greenhouses to build paths and beds in our back garden, he liked to grow veg.

Many a finger was *****ted knocking the old mortar of said bricks - he'd give me and my brother a lump hammer and chisel and off we'd go until injury.

The building site was a mega playground - jumping off the very top of the roofs into sandpits below (look at it now and it was maybe 30 feet), riding our bikes on the scaffolds, trying to hotwire the cement mixers and road rollers.

The massive mounds of top soil they brought in to the center was a good place to play as it had two large ponds formed by trapped water - we used to nick scaffold planks and put them across the ponds with milk crates to support then try and ride bikes over it. That usually meant going home dirty and soaked to the core.

We also had a small river on the edge of the site which we used to try and build rafts to travel on - never had own actually work. We used to put rope swings across it - I broke my knee cap once where we had no idea of angle and I heroically launched from a branch straight into the bed of the river.

    Kids back then were hard.

Must have been a Wembley Trophy. I was convinced as being goalie that they were filled with concrete.

  7. Thought it was just us - our "gang" ( all 5 of us under 10) loved making "camp fires " on the field by the woods - lots of tinder and wood. One afternoon it got out of control and the field caught fire - right at the back of the local bobby's house - he caught us and gave us old damp sacks and made us go back with him and put it out.
Photo of "our gang" - that's me back row - 2nd from left - note the snake belt - didn't every lad have one! We usually tried to lose my sister pictured on front row - she died last month aged 75. Grosvenor gang001.jpg

if we wanted more excitement than the local BMX track we would go to the local gravel pit and 'drop in' from the top :)

    What we did was...
Pile up all the straw after harvest under a big tree and perform acrobatic somersaults into it from the tree. Until some wag set fire to it. We couldn't put it out so we made an anonymous 999 from a call box and legged it far enough to watch without getting pinched.

Going to school under my own steam. I never got a lift, ever, even when school became 25 miles away.

Now the streets are packed with cars around schools at kicking out time.
