Swapped a Kafer brand alternator pulley for an older one I bought in a box as NOS at Sandown.. the newer ones are pressed together and tend to go wobbly. The older style pulley is welded to the hub so it doesn't fall apart so fast.

Replaced the Woodruff key, as the old one showed some signs of distress. Bought a bag of 10 3mmx5mm keys for a fiver on eBay.

Unblocked an idle jet, swapped the secondary main idle for a 145. Stuck in a 190 air above it to see what happened...

Swapped the near side front wheel bearing. While the old one wasn't perfect, it didn't stop the cornering noises. Next stop.. rubbing rusty backing plate.. looks like something is keeping the rust down on the edge of the back of the disc. Looks like brake discs are getting a bit worn too.. its 97k miles since I tidied up at the front, although there have been several new sets of pads in there.

Using the new jetting floored it a few times, checked it was running at a reasonable AFR.. about12.5 flat out up a hill. Got it up to 60mph on a short section of the M27... Oil temperature just about reached 80C ...Cylinder head at 100C .. Traffic a bit busy to really try it out. Rev counter accused me of hitting 4700 RPM.
    Went home.

What is that all about? It seems lots of garages don't do cleaning after intrusive work. I suppose you'd do it anyway but a token wipe would be nice...

    Anyway...yay, let the camping commence

It's annoying.. take a 20 year old Peugeot for a service and it comes back cleaner than when it turned up at the garage.

It was pretty grim... dirt, grease, oil... the big cushion at the back looked suspiciously like something was spilt (coffee maybe, dirt doesn't tend to pool in circles!), and just general damp dusty mould in places. Poor Clem! In fairness, I hadn't done much cleaning since the camping season finished (he's been away since the start of December somehow) so a good clean was needed, and it may have looked like I don't care much...
Anyhow, most of a bottle of upholstery cleaner has sorted the seats, some black rubber cleaner has made the floor in the cab look luverly, and some elbow grease and jif has got rid of the finger prints all over the cupboards
Time to think about camping :)

Depends what gear you were in and if your foot was to the floor when you got to 50mph.

  8. Wasn't very exciting. Ever seen a car chase in a Morris Minor? Eventually a copper on a pushbike pulled her over.

Not totally horrible weather today so I started on my list of jobs again.
First was to fit a new front number plate to the wife’s Skoda, it’s been broken since she murdered Bambi a while back (don’t mention it to her or there will be tears, again), but now it suddenly became an MOT failure.

Next was small tear in the pop top, my fault for being careless folding it down, I got a sample piece of material via eBay, then I found out my evostick can wasn’t shut properly last time and had become a hockey puck in a can. So off to B&Q for some Gorilla Glue, and I’ve stuck a discrete patch over the tear.

The head banger locker can come open going over a bump so next was gluing a small piece of wood inside to fasten in another magnetic catch.

Fired her up and tried to adjust the tickover once she got warm, at least I’ve got both throttles against their stops now but I won’t know if I was successful until I’ve been for a drive.

Finally, I’ve no lights on the main instrument cluster, and very iffy connections on the oil and alternator switches. I pulled the dash and radio out and discovered that while the is 12v at all the bulbs, the plastic connectors are so shagged that they barely fit any more. It seems that there is a small spade connector for each, so I can swap them for new ones without soldering. I’ll get them ordered.

Ever wondered what is lurking under your fridge?

    20230326_124536.jpg

Found a knife, spoon and a pair of glasses down the back of the fridge too

Gutted! Well, nearly. We're off to the rust doctor soon

Plenty of weetabix crumbled off. I don't think the original interior will be going back in. We'll probably do some "rough" camping in it until I make a new interior - I like a bit of woodwork

Well it wasn't the bus but the boat. Fitted the cleaned up starter motor.. and the engine still started badly.

Found a loose battery clamp and the strands of the cable coming from the master battery switch to the starter motor had mostly snapped. So the voltage on the starter went down to 6 volts cranking.

Found a spare crimp terminal for the starter cable and cleaned up, used a set of Knipex pump pliers as a crimp tool.

Managed to get it all back together..really need to buy a slightly longer cable as it's almost bar tight now.

    Fixed the dodgy starting..

I turned the crumbly but dry weetabix edges upside down, taped over both external surfaces, poured in epoxy resin and topped up with wood shavings.. still going ten years on..

Today I replaced most of the seals on my window louvres, using a set I bought on eBay, a couple were missing and a couple were very home made looking. I found that the best was of getting the old rubber and glue off involved white spirit and the Mk1 fingernail. They look a lot smarter now, rather than bugging me whenever I notice them.

I also put an extra magnetic catch on the headbanger locker, and after 24 hours for the glue to cure on the patch, I put the pop top down again.
