All the visible steel looks thin to me, like it's rusting from the other side, I think you need to clear another couple of inches. Might as well, you can make the door the right shape again!

Heat from welding will seperate the filler from the metal if it’s too close that’s all !

I used the stuff my local paint shop recommended, which I think was from Lechler.
It's designed for 2 pack so no problems.

Went to visit him, and assured him he would be home soon.
To be absolutely honest, the Dell 36 carbs I bought from someone on here almost a year ago were a pile of junk, and when stripped down because they just refused to play ball, appeared to have been stored outside in a bucket of water for the last few years.
Eurocarb have been excellent in supplying new parts, and Alex the mechanic has been an absolute perfectionist in getting them cleaned and working again when I would have just given up and sobbed quietly in the corner.
The (hopefully) last piece of the jigsaw was a sticky ball bearing in the jet in the bottom of one of the chambers that meant slightly irregular fuel to the pump diaphragm at low revs (or summat like that. Now cleaned), and the need for a new o ring round one spray jet (awaiting eurocarb’s latest delivery).
    It’s been a long journey.

Unless the seller said they were cleaned out and ready to go, it'spar for the course to strip carbs right down and clean them. That goes for new ones too. So, I suppose we should have warned you, you could have done it yourself and got to know them, knowing they'd be set up later.

For sure. But rusty water and disintegrating metal? That’s a bit more than ‘to be expected’ isn’t it? Anyhow, they are clean now (three times through an ultrasonic cleaner) and hopefully the last parts replaced.

That looks like the rust was in the accelerator pump with water in the float chamber, hence the problem with the accelerator pump non-return ball bearing, as that also is in the same pipework.
Somebody left that one out in the rain.. was it off a Baja style buggy or Bettle with carburettors open to the air ?
Could still have issues when it's all together because of more corrosion buried inside the carb, where ultrasonic cleaners maybe dont reach ..

They run beautifully - but there's just a tiny hesitation at low revs before you accelerate through it. Hopefully the ungumming of the ball bearing, and the new o ring -ensuring all the fuel is going through the spray jet and not some leaking out around it- will get rid of this. I do have a set of IDF 40s which were the back up plan, but I'd prefer the Dells and then sell on the Webers.
They could have been off a Baja which was open to the elements, who knows. That's the problem with second hand stuff - the history is only what the seller wants to tell you. At the time I was surprised the guy who listed these had bought them, tried them, and decided to get rid of them after a short period of time. When a deal seems too good to be true... as they say

It will, I had similar with mine. When the pump jet is delayed because it's pipes drained back the whole purpose of it is defeated, it needs to work immediately.

  18. Would explain why he got shot of them so quick! Always pot luck with these things. Sounds like you're sorted, tho'

I bought a whole turnkey type-1 back in the good old days for £50. It's owner could never get it to run right and did a smelly diesel conversion out of frustration.
The only thing I found wrong with it was the distributor advance was stuck. :D

Conversely I sold a car I couldn't get to run right to my "friend" Helpful Geoff. He stuck a new distributor cap on it and roared off. Barsteward!
