  1. Unfortunately not.

Do you have a ferocious rabid hound you could threaten him with?

Having found some (what I thought was) small rust spots I booked the van in for some spray work. They have let me do the initial prep and am so glad they did.

Anti-rust applied and now to do the P40 fibreglass filler for the holes and P38 the whole panel/lip before flattening for paint.

You were lucky to get away with a few holes !
When you get that back, make sure you really fill up the gap between the seal and the body with non-setting sealant, although if the panel in question has ever been welded, its rotting from behind as well.

Fitted some rubber seals round the air hoses on the tinware - one of those things that got left behind the work bench up at the Curdridge Massive the last time my bus was worked on professionally.

It looks like it's had a replacement front panel at some point prior to our ownership (and we've had it some 21yrs) so thankfully it's not decayed to badly in our ownership. But I will take on board your suggestion re a non setting sealant around the outside edge of the rubber.

Started her up after several months of slumber and backed her out of the garage into the lightly falling snow - sorry! Had to get access to sneak in some Ford flathead V8 engine parts that @Gooders pal Paul had rescued for me. Unfortunately Paul was early and Princess C spotted him and me carrying an engine block in before she went off to yoga . Ho hum, c'est la vie.

The paints on (the black line on the lip is from the black hammerite painted on the inner edge as I had no white) and the screen is back in.....but I was so smug with myself I forgot to take a picture.

The van is still at the paint shop as it was too risky with the snow to drive it home....so Monday is collection day.

They were on the beetle for over 40 years. I think the secret to making them stay on is to hammer those little tangs back flat, then push them back in evenly diagonally, with a fine flat blade screwdriver.
Was thinking a blob of JB weld wouldn’t hurt…;)

As I am going on a 600+ mile road trip in May thought it was about time I re-upholster the seats! Fiddly, relationship testing job but pleased with the results. Some before and after pics... Car seats.002.jpeg Car seats.003.jpeg

Found the replacement £25 rear guide roller bearing for the sliding door had worn down so much where the balls ate into the too-soft race that it had tilted over and jammed against the hinge casting.
There was about 1mm lateral play where it began life with basically a small clearance...

    20230311_112758.jpg

Measured up and it looks like a standard 19x7x6mm ball bearing assembly fits the hole where the ball bearings are grinding away, so I bought a couple off eBay.
I will peen over the soft roller metal to lock the bearing in place.

  17. Not for the Bay, but bought a proper mechanical oil pressure gauge for the drama queen that is the Polo. Has decided to liven up my life by sometimes turning on the oil light and hooting. Likely the ageing pressure switch, but best to make sure...

  18. Tentative look at the louver window, in advance of a friend popping round (so collaring him in to helping pop it out).

Original seal (slathered in sealant) has been pried from the body easily, with my trusty Veet scraper.

It doesn’t have the dozen screws holding it in place. Nope, my uniquely molested van has 2 bolts and washers clamping it on. Each side towards the bottom.

I’ll be taking it apart to polish up and put new seals on.

Clearly the PO put it in like this after a full respray.
Luckily stored mostly dry since then…but let’s see what nastiness lurks hidden.

Stopped an annoying buzzing from the odometer at 30mph , 50mph and 60mph.

Turned out to be resonance in the speedometer drive cable .. could shut it up by touching the drive while driving along.. wrapped some 3mm rubber sheetround the cable and stuffed the ends down the hole in the steering column crumple zone that the cable comes up through 20230312_153222.jpg
Also re lubricated the speedo assembly, (its datecoded 10.73 so it matches the bus) changed the backlight LEDs for some brighter ones.

Then installed the new ignition. Took it for a drive. Seems smoother and improves mid range acceleration . Needs some more firmware tweaks as the serial data interface on the ECU didn't work. May have been a few watchdog restarts on first startup too, while its sorting out some data.. but after the display flashed a few times it settled down.. 20230312_170035.jpg

I think mine has a standard glass seal with an additional rubber U section round the edge of the metal louvre surround sheet to make the stack 3 or 4mm thick the same as the glass that would have gone in the seal
