Hey everyone. Before I begin: * 77' type 4 rebuilt with '78 block. * 1500 miles put on it since re- build. * Took what I could from old block to save money (old motor had 132,000 miles on it) I was driving to work, I felt 3rd gear slip for a second and my battery light came on. I began smelling oil burning and when I was actually able to check to see the problem, I had oil leaking out of the center of my fan. Does anyone have a idea as to what it could be and whether motor needs to come out?
There’s an oil seal on the end of the crank behind the fan hub. Take fan off, remove hub and you’ll see the seal & hopefully where it’s leaking
The gear slipping is the other end of the engine . . oil leaking out from the other end onto the clutch can do this.. Just a thought - how much oil is in it .. like too much . does it smell of petrol (as its FI this is unlikely) ?
Do I need to pull motor to remove crank n such? I did all the work the first time while motor was out.
The fan end yes, the slipping clutch possible oil contamination ... well you know where the flywheel oil seal is. Alt light too - check the fan hub bolt? Why is your "oil" reddish brown?
Not sure about the color. Maybe my phone screen? Clutch/ fly wheel are new, throw out bearing was re used, new one had big chip in it.
Hello all. I figured I would post an update to this specific thread to keep it potentially active. I used a product called "steel stick" to re form the side of the slot for the crank woodruff key. Everything was put back together and I was able to take it for a relatively normal drive. It sounds a little rough. I'm assuming the ECU needs to re- configure itself after sitting. Thanks again to everyone who helped me navigate my problem.
Timing might be out of whack after messing with the slot. You might be wise to establish true TDC. and make adjustments.
