Information Raising a T2 bay

Discussion in 'How To' started by Datsolow, Jan 14, 2022.

  1. Hi all , I’ve done the lowered thing , now I want to raise my bus to do more wild camping/ touring / wading.
What’s best set up ? Does anyone in the UK supply a kit?

I think Type 2 Detectives do some raising kits Paul

They have no shame. Once the raising thing runs out of steam they'll be pushing "stock as a rock".

Or as a new trend, raised one side lowered the other

    The circle of life!
Those of us that try and resist the temptation to modify appreciate how capable a stock bay is. Especially with appropriate tyres and 'kit'.

As it doesn't have a diff in the rear axle, a bay does have a good ground clearance stock. I don't see the point of raising it myself, but fashion is fashion and they do look pretty cool. :)

They do. But ours will stay stock...but with the addition of a LSD ;). It's about the best we can do without 4wd conversion which is Uber cool but beyond the wit of this man!

If you are lucky with an adjustable beam, then the top limit is likely to be a bit lower than stock but not totally lowered. You can fit coilovers to push down and lift, and also stiffen the suspension so it doesnt roll as much and wander all over the place even worse than stock..

Then when you have decided you want to go down again because the wind blows you around, its just a case of bolting back the shock absorbers you had before, or removing the extra coil springs.

Its one of the strange advantages of my lowered bus with coilovers stiffening the front suspension and without an anti roll bar, that if I put one front wheel down a hole in a track, the bus body stays put rather than the front of the bus twisting over towards the hole...

What! This isn't a thread about what happens to your lowered bus, but a question about how to raise a bus. Sometime it just seems comments are made for post counts:rolleyes:

    Here we go.
Stock height is best. Get in and off ferries, no grounding with sleeping policemen/women, no worries with rutted campsites and the ability to drive over a pavement should you have to. I'm sure others will have different reasons also.

The wayward son returns. I like a good redemption story.

I am pointing out that the technique of fitting coilovers can be used to raise a bus if a stock adjuster doesnt go high enough . My bus is riding an inch higher than where the cut and twist stock springs left it.
And that you can even consider independent suspension if you have stiffer suspension. Such that I dont find as many issues with a lowered bus without an anti roll bar but with coilovers, even on rougher tracks.

Yeah but, I think the OP wants raised suspension, not just put it back to stock or he wouldn't have asked about the availability of kits.

  16. You do what you want
    Up down

    I fell in that trap
Did the lowering thing changed the beam and the back end also
    I sold that
    Why?
I prefer the stock approach now because
When they reel us all in ,
    Check what it is
I want to drive it rather than become being towed about on a trailer :D

Rear aftermarket anti-roll by Empi goes under the gearbox. It can restrict ground clearance I believe but I've not experienced this. Are there any other options that can fit over the gearbox, a bit like the equaliser bar on later Beetles that would allow complete clearance.
