Well the stainless tubes have arrived and comparing them, they are heavier (54 vs. 36g) and feel stronger than the standard tubes. The tube is narrower (21 vs 20mm) and the sealing ring retainer slightly wider at the head end. Proof is in the pudding as they say so will have to see how they perform on the road but so far I’m impressed with the quality.
They look good . Narrower so a little more room for the exhaust. What is the length between O-rings compared to an original tube?
Interesting. did they come with O rings and are they the same as the usual suspects or different in some way (the groove being wider!) Need to do mine soon but unlikely i will have the benefit of your experience on this as invariably the usually seal for a while ok when new!
When waggling into place I don't grip the tube. usually manoeuvre into place ready to push home by hand and then i use a socket on an extension pushing on the end of the tube to push home with a turning motion. Socket I use is one which is about the same diameter as the tube but chamfered so it sits inside. Removal however usually requires some gripping and turning so that would likely cause quite a bit of damage if as flimsy as you suggest!
Ive fitted that style to Gusbus many years back and they have been leak free & I hope, they continue that way. It’s coming up for five years now..
The Victor Reinz ones which came in the gasket set, they also fit the tubes okay, popped the tubes into the head, quick gentle twist to seat home (seam at the top).
JK, I gave the link earlier https://www.justkampers.com/0211093...-2000cc-vw-t2-1971-1979-vw-t25-1979-1983.html
I, like you, am not a fan of JK. Heritage have them (I think they look the same) and 25p cheaper too! https://www.heritagepartscentre.com/uk/021109335css-pushrod-tube-1700-2000cc-stainless-steel.html
Yes Dicky, probably have to give it a bit of time. I didn’t get o rings as I already have some viton ones to go on them. O ring grooves measure - usual tube 4.7mm case end, 3.1mm head, SS 4.1mm case end, 4.3mm head end.
If you mean the space where the o rings go, the O ring grooves measure - usual tube 4.7mm case end, 3.1mm head, SS 4.1mm case end, 4.3mm head end. Hope that helps.
Unfortunately, out of stock with no due date at Heritage. No stock at Megabug either and I can’t find any other suppliers.
No, sorry I meant the length of the tube from one O-ring to the other. My engine is slightly wider than original and if the SS tubes are shorter it would be an issue.
Hi just measured them, not as accurate as my verniers are not long enough, so tape measure and eye, but there is a slight difference.
Emm, unfortunately slightly shorter but they’d probably fit my engine – I already have a 3mm spacer in the crankcase.
I know. I built the engine as near standard width as possible so I could use the original tin and tubes – it’s about 4mm wider than standard and the tubes fit with a spacer.
