The ones who never made it back

  1. Wife has just broken down on the M1, think it might be the starter motor or something that has gone. Yesterday and today it would sometimes not start - but once going it hasn't been a problem.
This time supposedly the engine just died as she was driving along. Accelerator - just stopped responding.

    Getting recovery.

  3. Seems like with a bay it's not a case of 'if', but 'when' it's going to be on the back of a transporter :-(

Begs the question - why the motorway when it’s iffy?

20+ years of driving bays and never been on one.... apart from when I bought one that I knew in advance had major engine problems, drove it 100 yards and got it relayed home to save money.

I saw that but had to say it. Sometimes it beggars belief and grates.

How many dodgy bays use the motorway? Loads!

You’re more savvy re that than me. Personally I wouldn’t if it was giving prior warnings!

I wouldn't either but it doesn't get close to beggaring my belief or grating 4 years later. Let it lie, have a beer. :)

weellll. I drove to Keith's field this year. the van was not happy for the first few miles. kangarooing in 1st and 2nd, Usually I would go via egham / Windsor / Henley. I decided that I would go via M25 / M25 /m40. this allowed any issues to be solved on the hard shoulder rather than block an A/B road in the dark.
Turned out ok but that was my reasoning

I’ve done worse. I once drove from one side of southern Italy Apulia to Scalea across lonely barren mountains in 4o degree heat with what I thought was a dodgy HT lead, it wasn’t it was a piston. Yep we got stuck with a holed piston in the mountains in the middle of nowhere. That was in my first bay.

I seldom drink beer, purely the odd G n T these days unless it’s an occasion :)

I often have an internal dialogue when heading off on a long journey in my Bay as to whether I should use the mway or not. Mway often wins, though the ‘smart’ mway where I get on the M1 at Chesterfield is never a relaxing experience.

It doesn't worry me at all - I've never broken down so why would it? I even had an engine built so that I can cruise at 70mph+ so I'd be a bit daft to avoid them.

I like driving the bay on motorways ...let it spread it's wings . i don't get over 65 even then .
Travelling down to Cornwall from Derbyshire A 38 ...M42 ..M5 Quite a flat run all the way down to Exeter .
Then it's showtime when you hit steep gradients on the A30 .
How much more fuel would you use if you took the A38 all the way down and how long .
