  1. Can you give me some details on the engine and how to do it and where to get it done?

Its a factory production model , you should be able to buy a van with one fitted from new

  3. I won’t be able to find one. I have not even seen one for sale. Would it be fine to get someone to put it in for me.

Ahh, it’s pretty straightforward if you can find an engine or maybe run a mk3 golf diesel

It would appear that the T3 was only ever imported into Australia with the 2.1 waterboxer, and not the 1.7 KY naturally aspirated diesel or the 1.6 JX turbo diesel we are used to seeing over here. Gearbox input shaft is different, as is the bell housing and gear linkage between petrol and diesel models.

  6. is it easy enough to put in a manual gear box in a t3 or t4. Im will most likely get a t4 TDI however I cannot drive automatic

Can't drive an auto? Takes about 10 seconds to get the hang of one.
For a work van I wouldn't be looking at an over-priced old VW anyway TBH!

  8. can drive auto but hate to. just need a work van to get around as the kombi will be too good after the restoration

  9. hate to so much as its like I can't T3 are not diesel T4 rust, T5 and T6 unreliable expensive and are bad looking. I don't get why i don't just use my t2 like it is meant to be used rather then a Sunday driver after all the effort to restore it. @JamesLey uses his all the time. the T2 would of been good or a air cooled T3.

Maybe I should make my own T7 with the old german technology air cooled back bone:D:D

I didn’t have much rust on my T4’s. Tho two were Westies so maybe better protection. I had a lovely T3 air cooled that I had to strip the interior out of due to rats living in it! It had fantastic space inside :)

  11. That is why. Nobody ever looked after them from new. If only I could go back and buy a kombi brand new.

My T2 has been only vehicle for the past 5 years though I don't work out of it or commute, the mpg can ruin you, been there done that. My Golf TDi did 4x the mpg for example. Just sayin' - all well and good if you have the cash for the fuel. :)

They were an expensive option even back in the day. People did look after them.

  14. I don't that is why i was thinking a turbo diesel and I can only get them inn a T4 or I will need to spend over $10,000 to convert a T3.

  15. were they ever fish oiled to stop the rust?

    Of course!
Don't forget they are 45- 50 years old now. The first one I bought was 25 years old and didn't need welding. They lasted pretty well for cars of that period, but like any vehicle there was a time when they were old, cheap as chips and people did not look after them as it was not worth the trouble and expense.

Never had one but if I did it would be cheap - depends what's for sale in your area I guess. I'm no petrol head, I used to choose cars with comfy seats. lol

  19. Have you made any progress on this @Dean mitropoulos ?

I'm increasingly drawn to T4 and T5 adverts nowadays, but plenty of old builders vans out there with a quarter of a million miles on them - just run in apparently......

  20. not yet. I know t3 are easier and cheeper to service and more reliable then a t4. T5 and T6 forget it. unreliable and parts expensive. Probably best to go with a t3 or a t4 with TDI. unless I get some quotes on how much it will cost to get a suburb TDI put in a T3. I don't know yet.
