Hi, According to Bentley manual "CAUTION - On late calipers with two bleeder valves, it is possible to install accidentally a caliper upside down on the opposite side of vehicle." How do I identify what side is right and whats left? Help!
It's probably only how the piston cut-out is orientated (assuming it is correctly orientated). Bentley has a diagram.
I read about the piston cutout thing on Bentley, but can't find any cutouts on my pistons, so got confused....
Top and bottom bolts are different on mine (ATE) so I assume it must matter. Edit: Just looked on Schofields. Upper and lower bolts: https://www.alanhschofield.com/ourparts/prod_3591589-Front-Caliper-Bolt-Lower-872685-211615143A.html https://www.alanhschofield.com/ourparts/prod_3591597-Front-Caliper-Bolt-Upper-872685-211615141A.html And their calipers are handed.
Superb, Thanks guys! I'll order new bolts and throw the wrong ones to the bin! Weird tho that my pistons have no cutouts. But as the bolts are wrong, god knows what else is done there...
One type of ?ATE caliper uses cutouts in the piston to stop brakes squeaking. The other type ?Girling uses unobtanium shims with holes in them. In both cases they are set up so that the leading edge of the brake pad is under less pressure than the trailing edge.
Take a look at my recent thread for pics on the cutouts. Tbh you can't really easily fit them incorrectly I don't think https://thelatebay.com/index.php?threads/brake-failure.93535/
Would these fit Mike? https://www.brickwerks.co.uk/anti-squeal-shim-t3-girling-early-right.html Or these maybe for the other type..? https://www.brickwerks.co.uk/anti-squeal-shim-t3-early-ate-calipers.html There was some cross over on the early T3 stuff
Those shims do look about right - I ended up with tinsnips and some stainless steel strip for my Girling caliper - my shims are minimalist, as the stainless strip was only 50mm wide .
Oh but people do. Most pads come with an anti squeal backing on the pads now, so you don't always need the shims.
I agree, but eventually the backing gets rubbed off and then they squeal again. The shims are more effective in the long term, at least the Girling ones with the cutouts in them.
