Mine is fine, what type of steering box is it? The early boxes had a weird issue until they changed it to a bus style one. Sent from my Pixel 4 using Tapatalk
There's a little play in the steering generally on mine but seems to be more in the rack than in the Red9 steering box. Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk
I had it replaced with a newer one not long ago. On a run above 60mph it feels worse. Especially if on a windy day. I have to rotate the wheel an inch or so before the steering moves. So if it’s windy there is a risk of moving it more to correct for the buffeting. I have rotated the output shaft from the bevel gearbox and the movement to the rack is instant.
I'd say an inch or so of play in an old VW bus steering is pretty good, even with a Red9 conversion. Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk
Surprising attitude! Half the point of the red 9 is to improve on the slack inherent in the original steering box/idler pin setup. An inch of play at the wheel is poor, my original system doesn't have anywhere near that amount, in fact none is apparent at all. It still blows about, but not due to slack.
Interesting, mine is instant feedback. Is the play definitely in that part? Sent from my Pixel 4 using Tapatalk
Maybe you have a smaller than standard diameter of steering wheel I was pretty happy with my steering but now you've spoiled it for me Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk
I did adjust the box, replace the idler bushes and replace all the ball joints in the system... like you do... to ensure you don't have sloppy steering. So your rack is worn?
I am claiming almost no play with my stock steering. But that does have a PTFE lined bushing in the steering box cover plate. One inch is pretty bad.
So, I have had another play with it and it appears that the input to the steering rack is the source of the play. Presumably that’s a rack change and nothing I can tweak. It’s a t25 rack.
Pinion pre load apparently as it covers all the symptoms. However pre load adjuster is on top of the steering rack, through a “handy” cut out in the red9 suspension subframe. Just need to work out how to remove the locking device and contort myself into a suitablebposition. Might be a job for later.
