I think I finally got to the bottom of the random fails to start through fuel starvation - I reckon the fuel filter must be blocked . Despite driving 577 miles around Techenders without troubles, half way back on a 250 mile round trip to Bristol, at Membury Services, it fired up and stopped. And repeated, a bit of vapour and it started then died.. .

As there was a lot of fuel in the tank, it should have rushed out of the pipe from the tank if the cutoff solenoid was open. So I turned on the ignition, pulled off the contact breaker wire from the coil, ignition on, so the solenoid valve opened... nothing came out of the pipe. Checked the solenoid was clicking .. yes.

Fortunately I had a bit of 6mm OD pvc hose. I stuffed that in the end of the fuel hose, lifted the far end above the tank and blew back down the hose. There was more resistance than the "head" of fuel . But after blowing back I could hear bubbling from the tank, fuel ran out of the pipe into the bottom part of the loop of PVC hose .. So I was able to turn off the ignition, put the fuel hose back on the pump and after a fair bit of cranking to re-prime the system, it started.

So I think the filter is blocking with crud.. Thats the problem of using a metal filter you cannot tell if it is blocked on the spot.

To waste more time, I dropped a hex drive screwdriver bit behind the crank pulley, where it scraped when I cranked the engine ... In the end I used a dipstick stuck through one of the "windows" in the pulley pointing out. Turned the crank over by hand, and the dipstick pushed the screwdriver bit away from where it was sliding , so it fell out .. Tricky git..

Off to order whatever the equivalent of a Halfords HFF210 is these days now they seem to have stopped selling them.. its probably why I havent changed it for a while..

Just found "Inline Filters" and ordered three metal bodied FIN-FF30616 which have 6mm input and output spigots for about £26 including post and VAT..
After I chose them, I looked at the application list and it turns out these are from VW aircooled vehicles using early T4 engines. And big lawnmowers ...

This breakdown certified absolutely "Nuffink to do with E10.." because the E10 wasnt coming out.

  2. I've been using those ones for a few years now, no issues to report.

Have you built it up in the wrong case half?
Shouldn't the conrods fall? Specially that one that isn't exactly upright?

The studs are pointing up. Makes more sense that way...

The next bit is when your cam follower clips turn out to be less than ideal and a cam follower drops out and dents the bearing area of the camshaft as you trial assemble it for the 5th time..

Hence all my question marks - I can't remember, but recalled building up on the oil pickup half... bad memory!

  9. No, sir. That side is the business end with all the bearing dowels and studs in it. The rods stand up because the assembly lube is stickier than oil. They all rotate nicely.

Took it off for a drive to buy a new 904 gas cylinder . I think by flooring it in second gear coming out of the campervan shop, joining traffic on a 40 limit road .. (Viscount Leisure) , I managed to momentarily almost run out of fuel.. it leaned out for a brief moment then it picked up.

Realised I did have a plastic fuel filter in my bag of bits, in the bus yesterday but now I have ordered some decent metal filters, I cant be bothered to change it.

Also managed to buy the parts to build another hookup extender cable and a three way splitter for Eddies left hand mains socket as the right hand one never works.
Left the last one at Victoria Farm. ..

Was going to start taking out the gearbox today, but instead it turns out we are back off in the bus to Wales in 2 weeks time to visit our daughter. Going off to the same campsite up in the hills.

Finally managed to get a couple of hours on the engine. I don't know where the time goes!

Cam followers, pushrod tubes, pushrods and rockèr gear in place

Mike, I've got a CE code box here you can borrow. Its unknown provenance and condition but it may keep you on the road whilst you get yours done.
I'm aware you use the bus a lot, so if your rebuild takes a bit longer its available to help you out.
It selects all 5 gears and the oil was clean when I dropped it in Saturday.
If you'd like to detour to DE72 and pick it up, you are more than welcome.

Looks like I didn’t seam seal properly around the rear hatch so the rust has started working it’s way in. I reckon I caught it just in time, the metals still solid so should clean up nicely.

Thanks for the offer of a loan, but its a fair way out of my way on this trip unfortunately.

Sorry Mike, didn't realise you hadn't seen the post I tagged you in on the techenders thread - I've got your mains socket splitter / extender cable. If we can organise a rendevous, it's safe and waiting for you.
