Hope you have cleared the mixing of aluminium and steel in a likely damp place, with the gods of luck, and the physics of electrolytic corrosion.
At least the original was only two materials, steel and iron oxide. ..

I took a slightly different approach.

    First I removed this crud.

...welded up the corners of the upstand and repaired any rusty bits.

  4. Nope, I didn’t...because i’d no idea of an issue.
Oh dear, yet another nightmare born of bliss-less ignorance.

Hoping 3 coats of paint and seam sealer might appease the gods - plus it shouldn’t really be damp when i’ve finished.

  7. Just been reading up on it.
It almost liberated the Statue of Liberty of structural integrity. And she’s a lady of much integrity.

I’ll hope for “fine” and consider anything other to be ‘character’.

Took the engine out on Monday.
But I hate having to jack the bus so high to get it out, I was replacing the hinge panel so decided to make the lower panel removable.[IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

Did you deburr the holes and paint them so that the rust doesnt start growing out from the cracked paint, and make sure the rubber gaskets sealed properly under the aerial's 'feet' ?

More welding practice tomorrow. (Followed by more grinding, then welding, then grinding etc. etc.)
