Pan’s DIY Repairs

  1. The way things are going, this will doubtless get long.

I don’t have a welder so what we are talking about here is the use of Filler, Fibreglass, Fibreglass Filler and Seam Sealer (in combo sometimes). Usual prep will be done.

I’m documenting everything that eventually needs doing “properly”, but for now I just need to keep the wheels rolling.

I’m ok at working with the aforementioned fixes, but what I lack is knowing how things are supposed to actually be on a Bay and therefore what is the best fix (given their different characteristics).

So, without further a-due, I removed the Tailgate seam and was met by the usual scenario of Good Bad & Ugly.

Most of the surround cleans up nicely. There was filler in the groove (red line...I assume used to make a flush surface for the seal), and the blue line was only partially filled.

They look like overlaps of various panels. The lip down the sides and bottom seem to retain the seal somewhat.

I was thinking that Seam Sealer would be better than Filler for this - flexible and good water ingress prevention.

    Any thoughts?

There is a hole in the bottom horizontal (and some replaced panels don’t quite line up). For the hole it looks like a Mesh & Fibreglass Tissue job (skimmed with filler).

(The D Pillar is ugly and needs a pro, as does whatever connects them horizontally above the Engine Bay Lid...will need a temporary fix for those once i’ve dealt with the Tailgate.)

Other areas (corners and over the hump that wraps around the body - i’m sure it has a term), need levelling/shaping, so i’ll use Filler for those.

    Cheers folks.

  3. I wish!! Ha ha

Think I got the identifying term. I’m working on the one above that - not the engine hatch. Though that one is next, and in worse condition

  4. That was the best picture I have for you at the moment
You can see it better if you zoom in and move it around

  5. Don’t zoom in on any of my pics

    So this just happened...

Hole goes right through to what I presume is the D Pillar A chunk of filler (despite using my best surgical efforts to remove it) dropped down within it. Might use Fibre Filler on that one.

So I have yet another unexpected visual/access to the D Pillar. I can see it’s rusty but at least it’s still there.

Dinitrol is flammable. Is it a terrible idea for me to spray up & down the inside of the D Pillar with it?

    ...and this also happened...

Been at it fairly brutally for 2 days now though so the rest seems solid enough - he says!

  7. Cheers for those!

This is taking a depressingly long time. Have to get it right to prevent any water finding its way in, which evidently it has been for a long time.

Surprisingly those D Pillars are not as bad as feared (compared to Daisy’s). Worst part is the corner inside the engine bay and it’s only the front of them - can feel the rears. Think i’ll have to just fibreglass over them as the welding is gona be expensive to get it ready for the engine.

    Turned out alright.

Seal retaining lip is a bit mangled on the left hand side...

...but I can’t complain because I noticed it’s been cut off altogether on the right hand side!

Big rebuild of that corner seems well hidden.

Now it’s going to take another 2hrs to get all the glue off the back of the seal...though it’s strangely therapeutic between fretted fixes.

With Minion #1 having completed its task of removing glue from the tailgate seal, i’ve done a dry fit, but...

...the hatch isn’t sitting correctly. I’ve done various searches on how to adjust it but not found anything.
Anyone able to point me in the right direction? It won’t shut in its current position.

Also, am I missing a bit of rubber from the lock latch inside?

    Cheers.

I’d try the adjustment at the hinges – slacken the bolts and move it where you want it.

  11. Ah, these two each side:

Can see where it might once have sat from the paint Silly me thought it was more complicated than that.
    Thanks.
    I’ll hunt down rubber too.

  14. Thanks. Just found that too - all the others seem to be for early ones.
Didn’t realise that C&C are so near me.

Soz for delay. For some reason Tapatalk don’t seem to alert me on my own threads.

    Better alignment (not closed).
But yeah, probably a 2 person job to help get it perfect as it’s slightly prouder from flush on one side - but that could also just be down to the less than perfect job done of position this RHS vent panel

    No worries.
I found when adjusting the rear hatch if you don't fully tighten the bolts you can adjust the hatch in and out by pushing/pulling on the top corners. Once it's where you want it carefully open the hatch just enough to get your socket on the bolt and tighten it up fully.
