  1. Thanks Mike - I have ordered a load of new connectors (crimp versions and multi connectors) so will tidy up the rats nest.

The reason why my fuse box has been moved is due to the PO putting on a newer front panel but not sorting out the rest of the metal behind :(

    The usual 1 step forward, 1 back….

Clutch plate connected to the engine.

But, then I noticed this - can you spot the issue??

Lack of comments means no one knew what was wrong then :)
    The gearbox was not central!!

Disconnected the gearbox from the back hanger, turned the hanger the other way and connected back - all good :)

While under the van sorting out the gearbox I noticed that the clutch cable conduit seems to go all over the place as can be seen from where it starts on the offside next to the chassis rail - I decided that it should be straighter and no wonder the clutch cable I originally bought was to short :)

Cut the conduit then added a sleeve, all welded in:

Let it cool down then add some protection:

And here it is now, a more direct line and the original clutch cable fits a treat…..

But…….. The clutch pedal still doesn’t return when depressed.

Even with the clutch pedal upright, the weight of it pulls on the arm slightly which surely if the spring was strong enough wouldn’t happen??

Yet again the van is fighting me :(

Tonight I thought I would finish the steering so removed the pitman arm and centred the steering box - then made sure the wheels are as straight as can be.

Put the pitman arm back on and knocked it back.

Started to tighten the castellated nut goes on so far then goes loose again - so the thread on the steering box is fubared - must have happened when trying to get the pitman arm off.

So, I will have to undo everything and take the steering box out and see about getting the thread redone!

Regards the clutch, removed the spring and took a couple of photos of it so you can pass judgment on it.

Checked everything over again and all seems good, but decided to put the clutch arm thingy on the other way round (which I think is the correct way) - the weight of the pedal is not moving the arm now which is good, but the spring is still not pulling the pedal back up after being depressed.

Starting to get *******ed off again……...

There are different springs. I have one like yours in a box because I used "the other one". I don't even remember how I came to have two different ones or what they are meant to fit except that fitting the one that worked was very difficult. I believe you need one that starts off straighter like this.

  9. Yes - saw this one but doesn't say its for buses.
The one I bought was identical to the one already on - but will give it a try as not expensive.

In that case you're fitting it wrong.
I can't be 100% sure, maybe the one I pictured I couldn't fit and then used one like yours. I'll double check tomorrow, I know where the "dud"one is.

Unhelpfully I have one of each knocking about. Knowing how I operate I'm going to guess the shiny one was wrong or I'd have used it. I no doubt scavenged one from another box, I used to have a few kicking about.

  12. The one on the right looks like it would produce more resistance therefore the pedal should then go up properly.
Compared to the one I fitted, yours seems a lot straighter.........

So - will look to see if I can get a straighter one then (also looks like it will be a bugger to fit ;) )

There's probably a knack to fitting them. :(

  14. Well, I will find out ;)

Die arrived on Sunday so today after work, took the steering box out and set to it.

Nice new clean thread put in.

Just waiting for the new nut to arrive and hope I can then put everything back as it should be :)

Nut for the steering box and the spring for the clutch arrived today so as soon as I got home from work, I set to getting these fitted.

Started with the steering box - the nut screwed on with no issues so all installed - just need to add the pin.

Next, the spring. A picture of the old (left) and the new (right)

You can see the new one will add a lot more resistance than the old one so fashioned this to help fit it - worked a treat.

Good news - it’s on and when the clutch pedal is depressed, it pops back up again with no issues :)
But (always a but) as can be seen from the picture, the circlip flew off and no idea where it went - will have a look over the next few days and hopefully it will turn up!!
