I had this happen once, went all round the houses like you did. In the end I traced it to the wheel cylinder seal, while not letting fluid out it was pulling a tiny bit of air back in when the brake came off.
I'm going to dispute that you won't damage the brass adjuster stars with a hammer and screwdriver. They bend then snap off, I've done it.
Another way of helping drums off is to reach past the adjuster stars with a metal rod and then use it with a hammer to drive the drum off.

Took the hard line out the back of the drum and fluid comes out,put it back on and tried to bleed again,had a tiny spurt of dirty fluid then nothing. I guess it’s the wheel cylinder Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Very, if you can see the bleed nipple on the backing plate you can see the mounting bolt just below it.
