I'm fed up with paying for a BT line and home broadband when I only use my mobile phone and tethered laptop for internet connection. The home router has been switched off for months and the home phone has no use at all. Present set up with BT is - BT landline - free calls and unlimited broadband = £40-19 per month BT mobile - free calls and texts and 70Gb tethered mobile broadband = £16-20 per month ie. £56-39 a month or £676-68 per year!!!! I need - my smartphone (already owned outright not rented) to have free calls and texts and 70Gb tethered mobile broadband - and also to retain my BT emails. Just had a 40 minute call with BT seeming to give me the run around, basically suggesting that I can have the above for about £51 per month. Is £51 per month reasonable, or is there a better service out there?? Thanks in advance Mike
You could get unlimited calls, txt and tethering with a 3 sim only for £25-28/month, then ditch BT completely. We run a pc and a laptop or old phone with no sim. No problems, seems quite fast, 4G.
I pay 35 quid for unlimited data /calls/texts with 3 . The home broadband is with Sky after they took over O2 (?) And is about 18quid a month - no tv package but as expected they annoyingly push it at every opportunity... I certainly wouldn't want to pay anymore but am happy with the service, saying that its never been broken. I've heard that if established broadband packages go tits-up you have to upgrade the package to get it back I.e. it'll cost you more to get the service sorted out .. check out MSE (money saving expert) sim free deals https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/phones/cheap-sim-only-contracts/#high £18 unlimited calls and data as far as i can see - double check it will let you tether etc https://smarty.co.uk/plans/unlimited
You use your phones 3/4G to provide data to a laptop or similar. You can set them up as a mini WiFi station...but you don’t need any wired connection such as phone line broadband or dedicated cable services like Virgin. @zed can you stream content such as films on phone only?
Connecting your laptop / pad wirelessly to your phone, to use the phone data connection. A bit like using your phone as the WiFi router (but set up slightly differently)
I have a Smarty sim and it'll tether to my laptop but doesn't tether to my fire stick. The speed varies enormously day to day even from the same location. They use the three network so worth checking Three reception in your area.
My wife and I have been on Smarty since 2018. #7 a month for unlimted calls, SMS, and 2GB data, and whatever data you dont use, you get refunded (upto #2 a month). Tethering to my laptop works just fine. Edit: forgot to mention, they do other data plans too, and I was on the #20 a month for unlimited calls/sms/data for a while. I only cancelled that and went back to the #7 a month because I had VDSL installed.
I ditched BT phone and broadband when I realised how much it was costing me - changed to Plusnet which is half the price and owned by BT so is reliable. Separate mobile using giffgaff .
No limits on the thethering, you can watch things on laptop too. All good until the local transmitter goes down, then I barely get a signal and it's 3G. Not too often though.
you should be able to access your bt email address (from any device) without having to be a BT customer
What about getting a router that can take a 4G SIM? You have to be careful which model but some have a USB slot that can do this. This means all your home network works the same connecting to WiFi, just the outside connection is no longer a landline.
