    I would say 1 or 4

    Wrong. That would make a cuboid 4x4x5. A true cube would be 5x5x5.

    Actually, the correct answer is 8 where you can make a cube 2x2x2.

    There might be a few blocks left over but the question doesn't specify that you need to use all the blocks.

    The even more correct answer is n^3 where n is any integer between 1 and infinity.

    I hadn’t thought of rearranging them to make a smaller cube, great lateral thinking.

    Shouldn’t it be n^3 - existing number of cubes ?

    The question is "How many blocks are needed to complete a full cube". It doesn't specify that you have to use all the blocks or that you can't use more blocks than there are in the picture.

    Being a pedant and a perfectionist is one of the curses of life!
