Should we have a thread now the season is likely to start??

Just read the BBC article on F1 restart. The idea of reverse grids and sprint races has been brought up again for the races being held back to back at the same venue and poo pooed by Mercs because it’s artificial.

I reckon you could run weekend one as normal, use the finishing positions in the GP to set the grid for a 1 hour sprint race (no tyre changes?) in place of weekend 2 quali, and use that race result for the grid in the second GP. That way it’s still all about performance and winning!

I think two consecutive weekends of quali at the same track would be a bit dull!

And what about the drivers? What motivation is there for Vettel this year? Is Hamilton a shoe in for the championship? Has Coronavirus been a benefit to him as the Mercs will enjoy stable regulations into 2021?

I like the idea of a reverse grid like In touring cars but it would be so open to teams managing race’s to to get max points rather than wins and ultimately the racing will end up being boring.

I still think the point of most sports is the fans. Many times my team have been playing poor and the fans start singing and it gives them a lift.
Horse racing, motor racing, football and rugby behind closed doors just seems wrong to me.
Others may have a different view :)

  4. Team sports - yes I agree - when there are 1000s of fans cheering your team every time they touch the ball, it will seem rally dead in the football stadium - but horse racing definitely no effect from crowds . Motor racing also probably not much effect on drivers from crowd , same with snooker.

Without the crowds would all the above have become popular and had as much money sloshing about.

  8. Ah yes - different question - so different answer.
If no one is intersted in watching then no money.
I used to be in an archery club - great fun to shoot but dreadfully boring to watch - bloke from our area got in the British Olympic team and won silver twice - but no money - don't think it was even mentioned on the national news .

Crowds are important, but I think we need something to get our teeth into and divert our attention....

besides a few dads watching TV on the afternoon will be at least a little replacement for “common sense” social distancing!!

As many have done, I’ve watched F1 at Silverstone and I think you go for the atmosphere and the event and maybe less so the racing... you see the leader for 5s a lap and the shonky FM reception means no commentary! You just end up watching the big screens and getting sun burned / wet!!

Not sure they’ll notice any difference between an empty stadium and normal at the Emirates ;)

Lombard RAC used to be the best. Chasing about in the car to stand at a section risking being run over and trying to get some sleep in the back of my mates old Celica

I used to race sailing dinghies, fantastic fun requiring 100% concentration for an hour at a time, totally boring to watch.

You need to change to a proper spectator sport like pigeon racing

  13. I remember as a kid being dragged along to Selby Fork hotel in the middle of the night to see some old bangers with massive headlights set off on some sort of adventure , then jumping in an even older banger for a couple of hours to watch them blasting through a forest - probably Dalby ..
Probably the RAC rally but i couldn`t see the point really - at 11 years old it was all very silly .

I remember these little new 205 things. One (leading the race) turned over near us. We all ran over put it back on its wheels, the co-pilot climbed in through the windscreen and they ended up finishing 3rd.

  16. The Ferrari F1 team fired their entire pit crew yesterday.
This announcement followed Ferrari's decision to take advantage of the British government's 'Work for your Dole' scheme and employ some Liverpudlian youngsters. The decision to hire them was brought about by a recent documentary on how unemployed youths from Liverpool were able to remove a set of wheels in less than 3 seconds without proper equipment, whereas Ferrari's existing crew could only do it in 4 seconds with millions of pounds worth of high tech equipment.
It was thought to be an excellent, bold move by the Ferrari management team as most races are won and lost in the pits, giving Ferrari an advantage over every other team.

However, Ferrari got more than they bargained for. At the crew's first practice session, not only was the scouse pit crew able to change all four wheels and tyres in under 3 seconds but, within 12 seconds, they had re-sprayed, re-badged and sold the car to the Mercedes team for 8 cases of Stella, a bag of weed and some photos of Lewis Hamilton's bird in the shower.

Stay safe, healthy and check your wheels!

  19. As an aside I caught the back end of the BTCC from Donington...

Top competitive racing with the winner fighting back from 8th on lap 1 . Nothing dirty but 3 abreast on some corners- F1 may be seen as the pinnacle but seems to have lost its way , tame and over regulated in my 'umble opinion ...
