  1. Just a thought...there might not be any fuel in it!!!

When I first bought it, after a few days it wouldn’t start. Seller told me to check fuel. It was empty because there was a massive leak!
No possible leak this time but I just realised that I haven’t actually put any in since I last drive it properly in December

  2. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

That wouldn't stop it turning over though.

  3. you could try taking the plugs out, noting which lead goes where and turning it over by hand(spanner on the alternator/dynamo pulley nut) then you would at least know if it has locked up / seized, hopefully neither. After that all things being well time to check electricals

  4. Cheers Art, feeling almost fully recovered thankfully though I'm saddled with a lingering cough at the moment.

We were sitting out on Saturday waiting for the satellites to pass over but we only saw a couple. Last Thursday was much better, we had a great view:thumbsup:

  5. It`s probably the battery mate .
Voltage is just a guide to be honest , it doesn`t show you how many amps the battery is storing just the voltage - Voltage won`t turn the engine , amps will .
If you re-check the battery you`ll find the voltage is well down now , which is why if it was on the road it`d probably bump start .

Just pop on some jump leads and try again , if it turns the battery is goosed ...

    :hattip:

  6. Well it was empty of fuel, and putting 5L in hasn’t made a difference lol
Battery voltage was 12.63 and now 12.5v (all the lights etc seem unaffected), but if that still doesn’t mean it’s got the amps power (didn’t know about that) then I guess it’s had it Was new in 2017.

So, next question is battery suggestions?

Tempted to just put the car one in now to test it first, as can’t get a jump start on it within the garage.

Thanks for all the help folks.

  7. Can you get the car close enough to put jump leads across.

    Could be sticky starter motor?

  8. I've had the same symptoms a few times and it was down to a poor earth connection from the battery. Try a jump lead from the negative terminal to a good point on the body work/chassis/engine

  9. 5 litres of fuel may not be enough. I had to drop the fuel out of mine to change the outlet and discovered the bottom couple of centremeters was full of crud. Also the little gauze that sits on top of the outlet in the tank was half blocked so it would have taken a few litres to get above that level.

Nothing to do with why yours won't turn over though!

  10. Sounds just like when my starter went. You could hear the solenoid click but starter didn’t turn. A tap on the side of the starter a hammer/spanner sorted it. Then eventually had to replace brushes in starter.

  11. @PanZer try the above.....or sit in drivers seat, put it into 2nd gear & rock the bus forward and backwards.

Then take it out of gear & try and start it

  12. This, starter/solenoid is stuck. Rock it in gear may help, if not give the solenoid a tap with a wooden block

Not enough fuel has nothing to do with the starter not turning over.

  13. Surprisingly easy to rock to & fro, even without Led Zeppelin blasting out the stereo for inspiration
Nothing though. Just a clunk, slight whirr and that’s it.
    I give up...for now.
I believe the Starter Motor dwells in regions of the van i’ve yet to venture within

    Led Zeppelin now on...training/venting time

  14. Tried the earth?

  15. Yeah. To a degree.
I unscrewed it from the chassis, cleaned it all up with sandpaper but it hasn’t made a difference. Not tried with a jump lead to earth yet though.
Just tried one last rock-n-roll but nada.
    Fiddled with spark plugs.
Seemingly the Starter Motor then...or the battery amps as volts seem fine.
Fired up very readily just yesterday

Stupid question time (it’s been so long since i’ve driven it i’ve forgotten): Is the Generator light supposed to go out before you start it up? Both G and Oil Pressure lights are staying on - but then i’m not actually starting it.

  16. Mine was intermittent even between turns of the key, very annoying.

Oil and generator will stay on until the engine is running

  17. Both will be on to start with. The oil light should go out (but not always until started) whilst cranking as the oil pressure comes up. The generator light will go out once started as the alternator comes up to speed.

  18. Ah. Thanks for that. Total brain-dead moment.
Mine has been intermittent for a while when I think on it. Just not been driving as i’m working on it so i’ve forgotten a lot.
As always TLB will get me sorted

This is what I was going to post , a good thwack with a mallet on the back of the starter whilst someone turns the key ( in neutral )

  20. Finally got around trying to start it up again = failed.

    The done list:
    -10L of fresh fuel
    -Tried the car battery in
-Rocked it back & forth in neutral
-Tapped the Starter Motor in various places from various angles...probably rather too tentatively

So...should I now trying doing as you say and “thwack” it? lol
I wasn’t sure where to hit it. Is this area pointed to correct?

It doesn’t look very old to me...but I didn’t even know what I was looking for before
    [IMG]

Just wondering if I should also undo all the electrical points, clean em and put back?
(Not sure what that is! Maybe a general chassis earth - don’t look great though)

    Cheers folks
