I'm just starting on wiring the front end and need to put the steering column back together. This black plastic bit: I know it fits over the end of the white plastic wire holder: But I'm not sure where it goes. Can anyone please tell me if you feed the wire holder through the column top and then put the black bit on from the bottom? If that's right, how far should I slide it on? Just another of those daft bits I've forgotten as it's so long since I dismantled this thing.
From memory, you push it on until the male terminals appear, then slide the whole lot down the column. The connector from the dash then plugs into it. Got a pic somewhere, if you get stuck.
There's a bit of casting stopping the black bit go in from the top, on mine anyway. So I think it has to be pushed on from the bottom? Just not sure how far to push it. I've got a zip-tie holding the two white bits together so it's definitely already missing a couple of lugs. The outer casings don't go together very well either as a bit of the edge got left in Soweto.
Thinking about it, maybe I didn’t have black bits. The combs just clipped together and the pins stuck out the bottom.
It’s shown in the parts book (item 26). I think I pushed it up the housing from the bottom and then fed the cable guides through it. Or I might have pushed it up after the guides. Basically, I can’t remember but if it won’t go one way, it’s the other.
The black bit clips to the column, cant remember exactly how , you may need to pull them plastic cover off to see how
Ignore everything I wrote. Here's a pic. Long time since I took it to bits. I do have a black bit. I can't recall how it's attached. Or if it's separate. The van's a '78.
Thank you - think I'll have to do that. Would you have a mint set of plastic covers to replace the broken bits in my pic above? Also the two white plastic bits that carry the wires and clip together - mine are OK but a bit bodged now.
All original, but ignition switch changed since. I think your plastic shrouds are munged because someone's tried to pry them off from the top. If you look at my pic, they're attached from the bottom. What a bodger.
