I did a saloon up for Lou in 1988. Had a new factory engine, new crossmember. All welded and a total respiratory in maroon. Lou did 60 odd mile a day in it to her job at Malvern come rain or shine for a few years. When we moved into the sticks it suffered from the poor road and we sold it way too cheaply.

I think the number was FRU 944D

    We want it back too!

If were ever to swap my MGA it would be for an Old English White Moggy convertible with red interior

That engine has a sound all of its own. I reckon I could set the tappets and tune the carb on a moggy without feeler gauge or any carb aid, just by ear!

When I did my moggy I was at a car boot sale and a chap said to me he had a moggy engine in his garage up for sale. £130 no offers. I went to look at it and it was brand new in a crate with all the ancillaries on it. He’d had it 20 years from new and had bought two new from Morris for his overhead crane at work and the other was still going strong in his factory. I gave him the £130 without quibble!

  10. My first car was a moggy traveller , my dad got it for me n said there you are that’s the cheapest car your ever have. Then I realised why , he worked for gpo telecoms then and his mate worked in the garage , the rest was just free :D. Good old car sold it fa £60 , pale blue Twas , never went wrong and if the battery was a bit flat in the winter just used to wind the handle :D

Autocraft Engineering put some pics up recently of a NOS engine they have still in its crate, looks lovely:

  12. My old friend Peter in Lingfield is in his 80's and still buying vehicles. He has a lovely 75 blue and white pop top bay as well as other vehicles, and now he has bought a 1969 Morris Traveller for fun.

  13. Old English white, new wood, red interior, lovely. I think he paid a little over 6k for it.

I'd do it in a 1500 sp beetle.

The couple I bought my current beetle off, had just toured Europe towing a caravan with it. Apart from seriously sagging rear torsion bars, it coped fine. :hattip:

That doesn’t sound frugal though, but it’s a bug. What’s not to like?

The swivel pins on the suspension could jump out and leave you in limbo if you didn't grease them regularly ..they swivel on a thread and if grit and muck replace the grease your in trouble ...but if greased no problem .
I had the suspension drop in the middle of the market place in Ashbourne on Wednesday night , it was market day on Thursday and all the stalls set up around my moggy i was buggered until 6 in the evening .

Lou had one drop out on the way home from Malvern one. She had just turned off the dual carriageway and onto a garage forecourt when it happened. I went out to her, lifted it back onto the trunnion lashed it together with rope and tentatively drove it home

I wouldn't have thought it would be any less frugal than using a moggy, simple and cheap to fix... couple of sets of points, a condenser, and a roll of duct tape, sorted. :D
