Discs been in a while, callipers and pads for a late bay so I guess so. Just took it out and stamped on them a few times and it seems to have gone away..... New pads with old squeal plates and copper grease. Watch this space...
@Baysearcher I had a nightmare doing mine bought new everything had to take thinks back 71's are fun i don't envy you. keep going you'll get there.
There are ATE and Girling calipers. Cant remember off the top of my head but.. If your pistons have slots, that is the anti- squeal feature. If your pistons are solid circles then you need anti squeal shims with cutouts. Both aim not to press so hard on the leading edge of the pad.
Started replacing front brakes on my van today but struggling. I did the mgb ones with no issues, but the van is hurting me. Struggling to unbolt the callipers, they are solid. 19mm bolts, tried socket and ring spanner but not budging. Tried plusgas but no movement. Tried to shock them with a club hammer but still stuck. I assume the bolts undo anti clockwise. They must be well torqued up and rusted in. Any advice? I really would like to do the job myself, but don't want to hurt the muscles.
Might be worth trying some gently applied heat with a blow torch. Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk
Thanks, I have a 3 foot breaker bar with socket head, jack and gas blow torch so will give it another go.
If it's in a driveable state, roll past a local garage and slip the guy some beer/fag money to rattle them loose with a battery gun (obvs retighten before driving away!)
Never thought of that, its now plan B. As plan A using heat, breaker bar and my limited muscle power has failed to shift the buggers. But with the wheels off, used the time to give the wheel arches and surrounds another coat of Rustoleum, very nice. I will pop round to the local garage tomorrow and ask if they would help me out.
Or buy a gun - I was fortunate enough to get a 1/2" Snap on battery gun that is cabable of stopping the earths rotation - but theres some pretty good stuff out there for a couple of hundred quid...
