Good evening all , I have a slight issue with my 73 late bay Type 2 van. Not used it for ages and just given it a few recent blasts around the block over a couple or so months and I seem to have developed a slight leak on the front of the van under number plate near tow eye .Id say it’s from the steering box and has a slight drip over a couple of days but noticed it on the paving. So tonight I removed the panel (not sure what it’s called) and cleaned area to try and see where it is leaking. To my surprise I found a split rubber and can’t seem to work out where it has come from ? Is it a shaft oil seal? pic shows seal and green arrow shows where I found it ! Can any of you wizards shed any light onto it please , many thanks in advance ! Jim
Mines been leaking nearly 3 years and I just fill it back up every so often I’m not very mechanical and quite lazy tho so maybe don’t copy me
Get one from simply bearings 28x38x7. IF that's a big IF you can get the steering arm of you can just tap a new one in.
Looks like the output shaft seal. There’s a post on here somewhere with sizes. They’re easy enough to get and replace; so long as you can get the drop arm off.
Right thank you so much peeps . Appreciate it . Will investigate . Seen that the arm can be a bitch . Will have ago when I get some time and then report back . Many thanks again -)
Watch your teeth / windows / bus etc when you pull the drop arm off. It's likely to go with a hell of a bang. Leave the nut on a few threads so it doesn't fly across the garage....
I used a two-arm hydraulic puller on the drop arm having removed the steering box from the van. The only way I could make it budge. And it did indeed come off with a proper bang.
Someone on Volkzone suggested you sneak up on it with two big hammers and ***** it simultaneously on either side. It does work but you need the box on the floor to sneak up!!
