My 1970 bug

  1. Few more bits ticked off the list.

Got the engine bay seal and a condenser in the post today.
Bought my tyres off ebay as there was 6x nectar points though still need to finish the wheels before i can get them fitted.

  2. Finally got the running board installed on the passengers side. For some reason it was a PITA getting it to stay in place while i tightened up the bolts.

Painted the towbar mounting brackets in red oxide.

  3. just caught up reading everything nice work, our bug is getting there too. Question where did you get running boards as need some ?

  4. I bought them about 25 years ago but they only spent about a year on the car. :(
All the usual suspects sell them. VWHeritage, JK etc.

Gave the brackets a coat of black gloss. Still needs another as theres some red showing through in places.

  7. Sincer bolted on and all connected up. Didn't have enough oil to fill it up so gonna have to order more. :(

  8. Got a couple of the rims polished up so i can get tyres on them tomorrow. They're not perfect but as good as i can get with a cheap ebay 3" polishing kit.

Middles still need painting but the aerosol cans i bought quit after a couple of seconds of use. They were going to be this colour:

  9. Handed over a couple of rims and tyres to my local garage to fit and balance and they've not managed to get around to doing them today.

  10. Picked these two up this morning. Just need the middles painting now.

  11. Made and fitted a vapour barrier to one of the doors. Tried to reuse the rubber bungs but they are too far gone. I'm 8 short which is a bit of a pain too. :(

Fitted the taper tips to the silencer but the clamps are not curved to the same degree as the silencer or tailpipes so they bend before getting fully tight. I'll remove them again and grind the curve of them out a bit to match.

  12. Painted the missing bit of tinware with a coat of red oxide.

Gonna see if i can get the headliner made this afternoon. I've triple checked the measurements and i think they're right now.

  13. Finally made a start on the headlining i've been putting off for ages.
£25 of ebay perforated cream vinyl cut to size leaving about 6" of extra on the length just incase.

4 pockets sewn in for the headliner rods to pass through.

Edging strip sewn on. I'm not very good at sewing straight lines.

  14. Gave the bit of tinware for under the thermostat a coat of black gloss and left it hanging up in the sun to dry.

  15. I think i'm gonna admit defeat and say the bug isn't going to make it. I don't think 2 1/2 weeks is enough time to get it done, MOT'd and a couple of runs round to test everything out before hitting the motorway and a 3 hour run to Tatton. Theres always next year i suppose. :(

Still got this to work out what to do with the end of the silencer on the caravelle after this came off.

Also need to replace this step for its MOT once some more flap discs arrive.

  16. Life always seems to Chuck something in the way to slow progress

  17. Yep. Dog to the vets this afternoon so that was 1/2 of it gone. The vet was pretty cute though. ;)

Decided to try and get the headliner in, or atleast see how difficult it would be. 1/2 an hours work gave me this.

  20. Trip to our local end of life centre (posh scrappy) netted me a couple of boot carpets from a polo and an ibiza.
Looks the same colour as the original 1970 carpets on the heater channels and front 1/4s so will do nicely to cover the tunnel. :)
