Hello, This is a 50/50.... fit new calipers with the old anti squeal plates? Or fit the new calipers with No anti squeal plates? T2 - 75: We bought New brake Calliper kit, it came with everything but no squeal plates. Some companies sell them as part of a whole kit.... Any ideas? (The new caliper kit we have - has a solid piston rim - the old anti squeal plates have 3 small bumps which line up with old caliper piston which is not solid) Let us know what you think, Jude & John
Thanks - think we have hit the brain dead stage of working on the van!! Will grab some Copaslip & put it all together tomorrow. Cheers
Copaslip etc works for a bit but the squeals come back regardless after a while as the grease migrates away. It has happened several times . I have one Girling caliper (shims with cutouts) and one ATE (slot in piston) and its always the Girling without shim fitted that ends up squealing. If you have the shims with cutouts and your pistons dont have cutouts (Girling) re-use the shims. The shims are fitted with the cutouts facing down. Your neighbourhood dogs will thank you. I often saw dogs flinch when I braked .. I made shims out of stainless steel sheet. And chopped the Girling side ones down to make a cutout. The squeal is gas produced by modern brake pad materials. Increasing pressure on the trailing edge keeps the gas produced across the surface of the pad in check by squashing harder where the gas leaves the pad.
If you have ATE calipers @nicktuft , its worth bookmarking these from Brickwerks... https://www.brickwerks.co.uk/anti-squeal-shim-t3-early-ate-calipers.html Despite BW specialising in T3, you'll notice these carry a 211 bus part number. Out of stock at the mo, but you can sign up for stock renewal notices...
Think I might make some too. @mikedjames apart from cutting them out in the correct shape, do you have to create any spring loading with tabs, or do they work if just flat metal?
They work as flat metal .. mine have started to dish gently as the metal is squeezed a bit by the calipers.
