Newbie question here. I'm getting my bus out of storage soon and one of the things I plan on doing is an oil change. Is there enough clearance in a stock height bay to do it without jacking up?
You can do most things under a stock height bus without jacking it up. Type 4 engine definitely yes....do type 1 have filters?
Jack up one side if your not on the level, or some oil will stay on one side. I never bother like, so don’t listen to me
Use the drain plug – do not remove the strainer bolt, but if you do make sure it isn’t overtightened. And there is no need to jack one side – the sump is flat.
not unless you know it could be clogged up, aside to that, if you overtighten it the potential to damage the engine case is huge. Leave it be & all will be well
Not on a type 4. There is no need to change the strainer during an oil change – it isn’t a type 1 engine without an oil filter.
strainer kits are only 4 or 5 dollars here in Oz, you don't need to get under to do it,just don't over tighten
This is the centre bearing saddle for the cam showing the damage that can occur if the strainer bolt is overtightened. If the strainer cover isn’t leaking leave well alone and don’t whatever you do be tempted to nip the bolt up just a little bit more.
let it leak for a while the paper gasket will expand and it will stop leaking don't over tighten and you will be right
I took my strainer off and found fine metal flakes in there. Best not to look. It's just a metal gauze and easily cleans up though.
Does anyone know where I can buy the washer for the sump nut? I've looked on JK and Heritage and all I can find is one in a kit for the strainer.
