Hellooooo This is on a 2011 Volvo V50 diesel. 3 weeks ago the starter went, (car started in morning but made a screechy noise for about 30 secs after starting, then tried to start later on and was totally dead) RAC towed me to a local rac approved garage who fitted a new one. On Friday (on holiday in lakes) starter did the same thing (noise this time was horrific, lasted about 5 mins and mega burning smell) Thus was put down to jolly bad luck, and the RAC took me to RAC approved garage in Keswick and paid for another new starter to be fitted. Today, the starter has started screeching after engine starts, it's still starting the car but Im expecting it to burn out or fail very soon..... So, can't be just be bad luck. What underlying issue would be causing starters to self destruct?
Is that a separate part then , that wouldn't be replaced with a new starter? Sorry, I'm a bit fick wiv modern engines ......!
Sounds like the pinion’s not disengaging and the enginee’s driving the starter round. Had the same on my old Golf. New starter time!
That sounds most unlikely to me. Was this RAC guy a "Young Person"? I'd start by replacing the starter.
Either the starter is sticking oooorrrr the ignition switch isnt returning, always get the original starter motor tested before condemning it
I don't know if it's possible on a modern motor, but I have seen a bay that had a dodgy ignition switch, that would sometimes not flick fully back after starting, causing the starter to stay engaged with the flywheel. Have a look at the old starter and see if the teeth are chewed up.
turns out the teeth on flywheel have pretty much disintegrated, so new dmf, ANOTHER new starter (that's no. 3), and because it's all apart , new clutch and slave cylinder because it would be stupid not to. So my bottom is now available for rogering to earn some cash
