72 beetle tidy up

  1. So as you may or may not know I bought this bug from @Ploptop2.

I am hoping to get it back in the road asap and then fettle the few bits and bobs that need doing as I go.

The engine runs and gearbox works ok.

It has been stood for two years so will need brakes checking, fuel and vac pipes doing etc.

First off though is to sort out the front end of the "minor bump" quite a lot of damage was caused but I think it is repairable.

It needs a new front beam as the one on there is bent. Once that is changed, it should make a big difference and have it well on the way to an MOT.

It will be nice to see the progress pkrboo.

The engine is sweet and the whole thing was completely rebuilt prior to me getting it with new wings, bonnet, deck lid and clips, it has new headlights now too ( cringes and checks wallet) and the one wing has been renewed twice. I hope the new beam sorts things and you don't have to resort to a chain around a tree job!

Best of luck with it. I can't tell you how gutted I was to see her go, but I knew I'd lost heart in it, so better someone else sorted it!

You don't like having nothing to do, do you!

Think I have a good used beam buried in a pile of bits somewhere if you need it Matt.

  6. Picked up new beam this morning and decided to crack on.

    Old Beam is clearly bent

    Bit of rust treatment

And then got the beam in. Need to fit the leaves and then put it all back together.

The steering damper is absolutely FF. No Damping what so ever. Also the front shocks are a different part. Number either side and are slightly different lengths which bothers my OCD so I may change those too. Couple of ball joint rubbers to replace and all's good I think.

Framehead looks undamaged too. Can't always tell until the beam is out of the way, but I did suspect it was okay. So pleased to see it getting some TLC. Well done mate.

Those shocks could have been the issue I was talking about when I said I never felt that beam was right re steering. I never spotted that!

That is a nasty bend in that beam! The framehead most be solid though if it withstood the impact.

Looks like thick steel on those wings and bonnet ..are they as thick as moggy minors ?

  14. Oh, I forgot to say, the steering damper was absolutely knackered. No Damping at all. That won't have helped

You did say now I have re read the post. I glanced through that bit reading FF as 'fully functional' for some daft reason!
