  15. Im about to embark on the conversion myself.
Not considered changing my old Type 1 1600 Twin Carb'd for a Type 4 due to the perceived cost of parts along with the quality issues ive found with nearly all the repro parts available for the Type 1 - I assumed the same would be the case for the Type 4
Availability of the Type 4 engines and spares was also a concern for me when I was looking at buying our bus 6 years ago.
How much are simple items such as heat exchangers and carbs for type 4 engines in comparison to a whole "Alternative" engine?
Managed to get £2k for my old engine and have budgeted another £4k for all the other parts.
Im doing it slightly different to Matt in the respect that ive paid someone to convert the loom, source the engine and convert the 5 speed Subaru box. Rather than buying a donor and stripping it on the drive - the wifelet wouldnt have that!
Although I will be doing the actual installation myself with RJES parts. I did consider improving the type 1 to 1776cc or larger but that was looking at costing over £2.5k and still comes with the pattern parts issue and their poor quality.
Also improving the gearbox to effectively use the extra power whatever engine I went for was going to cost in the region of £1500 so already im up at around £4k and still not really looking at much over 90bhp and still have potential quality issues.

Ive chosen to use a 2.5ltr engine with approx 165bhp mated to the Impreza 5 speed box, will be towing a rapido everywhere so wanted the extra torque, ability to get to cruising speeds safely and not worry about hills and gradual inclines.
Am also planning on getting another EJ25 engine in the future to tear down and rebuild in my own time - shouldnt cost much more than £300/400 for the entire engine, when that is compared to cost of a pair of carbs I dont feel too bad.
However im not bothered what people have in their buses/cars/motorbikes as long as their happy and using them.
If you use your classic vehicle more with more confidence and are happy with your particular power plant who has a right to judge you?

Heat Exchangers (repro) for a type 4 are around £500 ish then a decent silencer, ie, Vintage Speed add another £400 ish, depending on what % discounts can be gained from the usual suspects.

Carbs, for a set of 40 IDF's from Eurocarb can be around £800 inc manifolds and linkages, I priced these up a while back.

It all adds up but, depending on what components are to hand, can offset other costs!

Good luck with the Scooby conversion, I hope you write a bit of a build thread
