Evening all, I have just been and picked up my type 4 cylinder heads from vapour blasters and one of the heads has a crack on the exhaust valve. Can this crack be repaired or will I have to get another head? I'm going to try and pop to engine shop tomo if I got time. Thanks
Yh I found that out this morning. But do 1700s use same size pistons aswell? The other head is Number ends with Q which also relates to 1700 head.
No, 1700 cylinders are smaller but the heads can be machined to take 1800 or 2.0l cylinders. If your other head is in a similar state as the one up there^ you need a pair.
The other head is fine. It has 93mm pistons which to me is an 1800 engine. It has cj marking on tinware. Seems to be a mismatch unless these heads have men machined couple of mill to take the barrels and pistons. May just just have to bit bullet and buy 2 new / second hand heads as trying to find one with oval ports seems to be an issue!
93mm bore is indeed an 1800 configuration, the head p/n is 1700 so would have been machined out to suit the larger cylinder. It would also suit a 2.0l so your choice of heads is wider but used heads could be in a similar condition to the ones you have. Combustion chamber, port shape and valve sizes are different 1700, 1800 and 2.0l so fit a pair of heads for the same engine size. What’s the engine number on the crankcase (below the breather tower)?
I will find out when get it back it off being cleaned. Might just have to bite bullet and buy two new ones.
Panda, I've got a pair of oval port heads available. No cracks, 1 exhaust stud needed (thread good), 1 spark plug hole had been tapped to the larger thread but threaded sleeves are available for this (JK I think). Part number is 021 101 371 S. I measured the valves and I think they're 41mm and 33mm. They'll need a bit of a clean up but I've decided the combustion chambers. I'd normally want £300 for the pair but I'll take £200 plus £10 courier charge.
Cool cool. I managed to find a local chap who is looking through his parts in the morning to see if he has a head to match the other. Can I round that size valve with 93mm pistons? That's 2l valve size isn't it? The engine as it stands is running 93mm pistons with 1700 heads that have been machined to 1800. That it was I have concluded on today! Lol
