Just got off the phone to him and he said he'd be at the station on Tuesday, he doesn't want to do a bank transfer cos it might take a while. He wants cash but says I can accompany him to the bank, am I being over cautious why would he come over here If not to buy the bus, I didn't give him any info apart from the first six numbers of the vin and the fact it is classed as a motor home. Cheers from an absolute numbnuts when it comes to this kind of stuff

  3. It was the email at two in the morning that sent the alarm bells ringing

  4. Have someone wait with the bus ,,,he'll go to the bathroom make aphone call and dissapear ...if its dodgy that is.

You don't meet him at the station in the bus, pick him up in your car and do the transaction at your house with a witness!

I'd be wary of him wanting copies of the V5 and MOT cert numbers etc, not saying it is dodgy but for me, that would set alarm bells ringing.

He is from France so it may well be how the French deal with car sales.

  7. The blokes a knob, he's going to come over buy the bus drive from Hemel Hempstead to Kings Lynn and then Dover the following morning. Then he's going to drive it to Nice via Paris.

At least he's an optimist :D:D:D:D:D

Why does he need the information, I assume that having bought on UK plates then in France he has opportunity within reasonable time to register it. You need one of those nice French people @lost-en-france for example to help you understand what Arnaud needs the info for. It all feels a bit dodgy to me.

The advice not to take the bus to the station seems sensible and take a couple of your friends.

Has he said which bank? Because if I was getting paid cash I'd want to take it to my bank asap, I'd be slightly wary of money laundering and being left with a load of fakes.

It's true about the French system, if it's not appropriately registered etc he will struggle to use it, it's coming out way that sort of legislation. Giving out the chassis number is no different to the details you get when HPI ing something, he can't steal your van with those details

Would you buy a van without proof of ownership and legality ?

definitely not, however, I wouldn't ask for the exact details of the V5 or photos, I would take time out to go see the van, spend a few hours with the owner and go over everything, leave a deposit and go back.
Exactly what we did with Major - he was 200 miles away in darkest Essex.

  12. It doesn't look remotely like a scam.
I think you'd find he needs all that info for legality and insurance
    Good luck
Oh you could meet him at the local police station

  13. What I don't get is he's never seen the bus I could be the scammer yet he's coming all this way. I know you can make money from this kind of bus but I still don't get it

  14. He may want to check your legit too. LHD bus is probably 20 times easier to register from EU country into France than from the US. If he turns up with the cash cant go wrong. Take it in a bank take a mate to wait with van.

  15. Wow - he's coming all that way to buy a bus he's never seen - definitely an optimist but doesn't seem like the usual scammer. He will need the chassis/VIN number to insure the vehicle and book it for the ferry won't he? getting the money from the bank and then paying it straight into your account there and then is a good idea - I did something similar when I bought my bus.

I've bought a lot of vehicles unseen, it's fun :D

  17. Yes it is - but can be very scary if it is £10K - the Frenchman must have nerves of steel - and he's going to drive to the South of France in it!!

    Don't listen to Davidoft!

It may be ok. I would go to the bank with the chap to check cash is ok and put it my account before I handed over the keys.

Just had another thought. He's not taking van details to ring it is he? He could stamp out another vin plate.

  20. Assuming not everyone is a scammer.......I've sold a few to VW's to France now....on the basis that if they made the journey then they were going to be buying it and be driving back in it!
The French system is a nightmare & the buyer only has a certain amount of time in which to register it and all the info needs to be present...

I would ask for a copy/scan of the buyers address, passport, driving license, bill for their mobile phone with the number they are using.... they would need to arrange with a bank to take out GBP prior to arrival....

you can send scanned copies of your details/ownership but blank out the address so noone knows the home of the van etc...
