  1. where are you in the country?

  2. Newquay in cornwall :)

would I only need the advance one if I was to fit an svda

if sticking with the 009 would the standard one be ok?

How standard is your engine? Only ask as my type 4 is standard (aside twin Solexes) and it never ran well with an 009 and electronic ignition. It's had a standard (second hand) distributor and points for over 2 years, a session on Peter Burgess' rolling road and has never run so well.

  4. standard 1600 TP with a set of 34 ICTs

009 dissy are best set at full advance, so an adjustable gun would be more accurate. Although you can just paint a 30 degrees timing Mark on the pulley if you only have a TDC gun.

  6. I think I need some sort of guide for setting the timing :p

  7. Get the engine warm. Make sure you mark the TDC mark with a bit of Tippex. and mark the split in the crank case a the top of the block ( behind the lower alternator pulley) with tippex too.

Get a timing light with adjustable advance and set it to 30 degrees BTDC. You will then need to slacken off the dizzy clamp so you can just move it.

Rev the engine to 3000 rpm. Turn the Dizzy with the strobe on so that the TDC mark lines up with the split in the crank case.

Tighten up the dizzy clamp. Check it has not moved.

    Job done.

  8. sounds easy enough, but how do I know I'm at 3000rpm, no tacho :(

  9. Ah..... problem, you need to get hold of a timing light with a tacho. Or, some multimeters also have a tacho facility.

Alternatively I think with the 009 you can set the MAX advance to 30 degrees. Just rev the engine till it passes 30 degrees and then back off the timing to 30 degrees.

  10. This. Just rev the nuts off it and see its not advanced beyond 30 degrees. As you rev you should see the timing mark move.

  11. He sets it to 32, but most people say 30 is best to avoid getting too hot.

As above... as you increase the revs, you will see the timing Mark move to the left.. keep increasing the revs till it stops moving left. That's Max advance.
