Also, check points condenser etc, I could feel the points wearing on my van as I drove it it would run worse and get worse on fuel too
. Id be worried about all your gas lines if you haven't replaced them yet, The ones I can see in the motor or 40 years old. Big problem. Going back to the tank fuel pump looks like they've been changed Through the firewall.. But I'm sure if you crawl under the bus . From the tank the larger one leading to the fuel filter is original ..........you're going to have a fire.!. Lots of dry rot.you are on borrowed time. Never fill up the bus to the top with fuel. Your fuel neck it probably rotted too. You'll be asking for It. .! Looks like your bus has a lot of rubber thats been only visually checked. Check the one coming frome dizzy towards the firewall . if something is cracked and you can see it be sure that it's worse than you would think it would be.The big S-boot. you can take off and use some bathroom silicone on it. That works,,,no problem. Get in there, get your hands dirty, if you start paying someone to fix this. You'll never be happy ,and you'll be broke.Forget the temperature sending switch. Id invest and some rubber. At least you know it's all original no one's ever butchered it.
Thanks mate, I'm going to dip my toe in with the hoses. Everything from the fuel tank to the engine is new. Fuel filler is new too, a pig of a job I was told! The points have been changed, not sure on condenser so will do that.
I know F all about FI, but did this issue start after you changed anything, you mention a noisy fuel pump, I wonder if it's not able to keep up with the required fuel flow you need when you put your foot down?
You know at least as much as me and probably more! The issue started on the original fuel pump. The old fuel lines and filter were full of crud so we assumed the pump was also clogged up, it was also noisy. I bought a pump which seemed to have been used to good effect by others on the forum though I am not convinced so have a new one en route along with all hoses for the fi system.
@Bathtub57 Here's some more interesting information that may simply serve to confuse, but I take from it that you need the correct spec pump for FI? http://www.itinerant-air-cooled.com/viewtopic.php?t=213 BTW I was told in no uncertain terms NOT to mess with the AFM by pkrboo & davidoft.
My concern is a previous owner may have already done that as there is evidence of silicon sealer around to top of it. Thanks for the article, my knowledge is growing.
Thought I'd post up an update. Thanks to everyone's input on here I have improved if not quite completely fixed my FI problem. The main culprit was a blocked filter next to the tank on the outlet line. I removed the filter replaced the line and fitted a correct square filter before the pump. Secondly I replaced the pump. I don't think this was causing any problems but it was wrong, it had a 13mm inlet pipe, and should be 11mm. The pump is quieter but not quiet. Could this be that it is not getting enough fuel? I have not cleaned out the tank but might have to. The S pipe has a crack in it. It's taped for now but I have a replacement one now and will fit at the weekend. Some other pipes also need replacement at the same time. I went for about a 20 mile drive yesterday and it was good, smooth and no problems ( with the engine anyway). Power is ok but now what I am expecting and I think there may be other problems, there is an exhaust blow for one. 80kmph was comfortable. The engine is idling high which might mean more leaks lurking? My biggest problem now though is the dreaded squeaking brake squeal from the new discs. Bloody nightmare!
