@monkeyvanwestybike why don't you like Subaru engines? I rather like them

  4. You're a lovely bloke, I've always said that about you.
You are aware of course that I actually hold the lap record at Donington Park for a bay?
    And drive like that everywhere...

@paulcalf - I'm not really after increased performance, although if I could afford it I'd love a huge 84mm throw crank in an otherwise bog stock Type 1.
It's just that some of the horses from my original 1600 appeared to have bolted and a good stock replacement, guaranteed to last much longer than a couple of years are hard to come by & pricey when you do. I was really thinking of a Subaru simply as a cost effective swap, but then I started thinking about parts availability...

  5. Well my son in law parked his Impreza
On my block paving and it spat brake fluid everywhere
And then the Mrs blamed my van for it
    That's all :)

Now we all understand, you should of said that in the first place, I had a similar thing happen to me, the dog jumped on the bed and wiped his dirty arse on the clean duvet cover, the wife blamed me, now I hate dogs

  8. I fear the value of our busses will be the death of them, as people who will be able to afford them won't want to devalue them by using them. A bit like an old house, "it must be restored using original materials" etc. but if people didn't do a bit of bodging in the past there probably wouldn't be many around now. If we stick to just keeping things original, how many will be left in the long run and then only as meuseum pieces, how many splits are original and used like we use our bays? I bodged and modified my beetle so many times in the last 26 years, I know better now but would it still be on the road if I hadn't. I would have probably lost interest if I hadn't put discs on it lowered it, alloys, bigger engine, etc. etc. but at the end of the day its still on the road. The camper is almost completely original but what about when I can't justify keeping a camper worth ££££ that will cost ££ to change the engine in. I'd have no problem going scooby or whatever. I want a bus to use, thats why a got a late bay.:worship:

I genuinely can't see that day, they simply aren't that rare.....if you look at genuinely rare vans such as Comers, they are never worth a ton of money.

What people pay and what they advertise for are two different things.

    How about
Don and Bazza cabs, or McCockney cars
This time next year we'll be milyon- hairs:thumbsup:

This thread has made me think about how much money people actually spend on their beloved bays.

The thing that always strikes me is how the scene took off and the difference between the scene and the people who buy/bought VW campers new as a practical holiday home.

The scene came about from people buying up old dubs that wealthier people had worn out and running them on a shoestring, because that was the cheapest way into what was a more upmarket pastime. The big spending on old dubs is a recent thing. Most sensible people buy new dubs to do any reasonable amount of carefree camping, we are just throwbacks to a past time spending huge amounts on old vehicles that in reality are past their best and we would probably be better off buying a new camper. But that just wouldn't have the same vibe would it?

I've had 3 subaru turbos, all never rebuilt, with a combined mileage of 440,000 and counting. Two of them were remapped and fitted with Prodrive exhausts, and they never failed an emissions test.
Non- turbos would sail through I'd imagine.
Mind you, none of them had the kind of short exhaust you'd have to fit on a busaru!

That's funny, I was just wondering if there were any Alfasud engined buses around! Loved those things, had 3 of them in the 80's. Rust buckets mind, must have been thousands of engines left in rotting shells!
There's a guy in Italy who sells reconditioned Weber and Dellorto downdraughts, wonder if that's where a lot of those come from...

  19. I got my Dells from him! Forget his eBay name. I think he just tours Italian scrapyards picking carbs out of piles of rust that were once Alfas...

An Alfasud engine in a bus would be interesting.
