Holy thread resurrection ! Just thinking out loud here; Do Subaru conversions all use the original VW gearbox or could I have a lazy modern bader-box fitted at the same time? Are all Subaru engines frenzied 16 valve efforts or do they make an eight valve plodder as well? Ta
All of the EJ series engines have four valves per cylinder and are either SOHC or DOHC. The earlier EA engines had two or three valves per cylinder but if there are still any around I don’t think you’d want one.
You could use the Subaru gearbox and convert it to two wheel drive and reverse the rotation. Not particularly cheap but the parts are available from Subarugears http://www.subarugears.com/
This is going to be an interesting thread. There is quite a lot of stuff on youtube which may be helpful. My 1600tp engine has failed but sadly I am too old to tackle an engine replacement myself. I haven't decided yet about which engine to go for.
He certainly knows more about it than I do. enjoying the vids but have to admit to dozing off several times. His voice!! zzzzzzz
How does a Subaru installation work in practice? My only experience of gearbox/engine swap has been a Scirocco 4+E on an injected 1.8 engine was total pants, the ratios are just too high, the engine never comes on song, whereas the same box on a single carb, low compression 1.6 is superb, you just waft it along on the torque. Similarly my only experience of multi valve engines have been 944S & V-8 Jag, both are totally flat & dead below 4,000 rpm & mental at high revs. Sadly the folk at http://www.subarugears.com/ don't do a bader-box. The Subaru conversion sounds like it might not be for me.
When I replied earlier I must admit I had no idea what a bader-box was and assumed it was rhyming slang for something but I couldn’t be bothered to work out what. Google comes up with a few options that don’t seem relevant to anything vaguely related to motoring or engineering but did suggest that I might mean badger-box, that led to badger baiting, a blood sport in which badgers are baited with dogs, often with unsavoury consequences. At this point I was reluctant to delve deeper into the possible meanings of badger-box and gave up. Fortunately as you’re no longer interested in a Subaru conversion I won’t have to waste any more of my valuable time and can be content that the meaning of bader-box will remain one of life’s mysteries.
I’m guessing a bader-box is an automatic transmission; he lost his legs during WW2 and had a bit of trouble pressing a clutch.
