A Friend of mine is selling his very very nice van

VW Camper Type 2 Bay Window 1979, 1600cc - One Owner 17,000 Miles from New! £34,995

Where do I start, this is a very rare opportunity to own one of the finest un-restored Bay Window Campers in stunning show condition. Dry stored all of its life. A one off bus having only done 17,000 miles from new with one owner.

The chassis is still covered in wax oil and never been welded. Amazing original outer bodywork paintwork. Drives superbly, mechanically great. It is a top of the range UK right hand drive Devon Moonraker conversion, which sleeps 4 adults. The interior is also like new with a cooker and sink. (Even have the original 5 cross ply tyres)

Once it is sold you will not find another true classic VW camper that will only appreciate in value in such unreal original condition like this. Really must be seen to be believed.

Its worth the same as a crappy modern Danbury any day.
But before someone purchases it, they had better organise proper accommodation for it , to keep it in the manner that its been used to.
Its like buying an aircraft the purchase price is only 30% of the true cost.

I'm interested in how long its been laid up for with a mileage like that,
and how was the engine inhibited.

  10. Its a lovely van and wouldn't be out of place inside at Volksworld in my opinion.

Having a very low mileage and being laid up for a lot of years may be a mixed blessing. Some commissioning costs would surely be needed and those old cross ply tyres would have to go.

In terms of investment potential, if I had £35,000 I would probably look for a splittie or an mga.

Cross plies have been changed (kept for prosperity) and it's been recommissioned ;), drives and sounds beautiful

  12. you know, when I saw the engine pic, I wondered if it had been got ready.

its a fabulous van and will easily sell, and hopefully the new owner would look after it.

there are collectors out there with the means, I bought my mgb from a collector 12 years ago and he had so much spare cash and a passion for cars, so he bought good ones, used them a bit and sold them on. Bit like Wayne Carini on Chasing Classic Cars on Quest.

hard to imagine this lovely van out on the road getting dirty and scratched.

  13. Why.

Why would you keep it cooped up for 25yrs...then sell it? It's hardly an investment, the purchase costs, maintenance and storage over that length of time would far outstrip the sale price.......

So what's the story behind it?

Bought it new , used it for 2 times family holidays a year, children outgrew it, simply left it in the garage, cost nothing to store and only cost about £7k new , not a bad return including use

    I'll hazard a guess at:

    Never really used it
    Didn't intend to sell
Now has something more interesting to spend the money on.

Fair play I reckon. Even when I bought mine (not that long ago really) not everyone buying one was obsessed with it being "an investment".

Maybe the original owner has died, like money, you can't take it with you.

  18. May well be the story. I see a time warp 1959 red mini at local shows, only done about 8500 miles. I think the lady owner had it from new and when she stopped driving, the car was put in storage. when she passed, the family sold it for big money.

The problem for the new owners is they don't want to put miles on it so only show it and store it rest of the time, to protect their investment.

  19. Would generate more interest if described as 'original and un restored Vw camper' , rather than Best Camper in the UK
